Does anyone have a fool-proof way to select a good watermelon? I've tried selecting the ones that have some yellow on them, the ones that have a hollow thump sound, the ones that don't have a bit of vine left on the end, but it still seems hit and miss with finding good ones.

Also, how bad are non-organic watermelons? I never eat them unless they are organic, but my husband eats about one a day.

Lots of love to all of you,

Wendi

I have been massively addicted to watermelon for the last year or so and have indulged my craving to it's full extent. I was a little afraid that I would get flabby from the "sugar" in the watermelon, but I'm here to tell you that if anything, my skin appears more cellulite free than ever and I usually eat a lot of watermelon every day. The grocer at Whole Foods says to look for a dried out stem to find the perfect watermelon. He claims that a green stem means that the melon will not be ripe, but if it is dried out, you will have a delicious watermelon. He also says that thumping doesn't work! Not that I ever knew what I was listening for!

look for a yellow or cream colored ground spot on the melons belly.

look for heavy filled out ends, rather than pointy ends.

look for sugar beads bubbling out the rind.

I just planted some sugar baby's in the garden. Anyone tried to grow them? I will be delighted if I can grow my own in the summertime.

I love the texture. I love to squish it in my mouth and make it "melt" and crunch at the same time.

If you have hypoglycemic tendencies...juice the whole watermelon INCLUDING the rind. I'm on a watermelon kick these days because it's in season and priced reasonably. Watermelon ONLY first thing in the morning. Melons food combine poorly so eat them alone.

See above post. Yes the rind is edible...as well as the seeds.

Can someone please clear how badly watermelons rank on the pesticide scale if they are conventional?

I had the choice today between:

-pre-sliced organic watermelon
-seedless conventional
-seeded conventional

I opted for the seeded conventional... I avoid anything pre-cut like the plague!

*shakes fist* I don't know where the mountain of organic watermelons went, but I hope they're back soon!

I bought three big ones (conventional) today. I am struggling (see other post), so hopefully, this will help.

Why do you avoid anything pre-cut like the plague, phantom?

Oxidation, less freshness. I want to cut/bite the fruit myself to get the most love and nutrition. >8)

Makes sense, phantom.

I put the left over half face down on a plate or cover it with cellophane if it's already been doug into and put it in the fridge. Luckily oxidation can barely get to it before I'll finish it up! :>

Do have to say that those ready-cut pineapple or melon pieces are a godsend on the go. I am a touring musician, think eating out of gas stations (going bananas!) and airports... A fruitcup is sometimes as good as it gets.

Okay - so what is the skinny on blending - or juicing? I just juice the rind? and blend the fruit? Then mix?

I am with you cocoa nibs with fruit on the go. Sometimes it is all you can get - the other day we had to stop while travelling at a gas station and all I could find (luckily) was a lone pear sitting in a basket. After a good wash, I sunk into it and was so thrilled not to be eating packaged ritz bitz crackers or whoppers that my friends were comsuming. Ugh.

I juice the whole lot

I prefer blended, I blend all the pink and all the white with 2 limes. DONE!
