Irregardless of all of the scientific clarification, we're essentially saying the same thing. And yeah, I thought to mention I have a mixed racial ancestry in my original post, like the vast majority of black americans irregardless of their skin color. My grandfather was multi racial (dutch, african and native american), my great grandmother was german and I have tons of caucasian cousins.

Despite all of this, there is still the belief that black folks don't need to protect their skin and "we don't burn" which was the point of my post. We do need to protect our skin, whether very dark, light or somewhere in between. Maybe 1000 years ago, it didn't matter but we are all impacted by environmental changes today.

And who cares really about looking younger. I wasn't bragging...sheesh. It's just a fact that most individuals with more melanin, including white folks generally do defy their age. Not all, but most.

Enough said as I don't want to hijack the thread with this as it's wayyyyy off topic. Thank for your insightful post Arugula. I learned a thing or two. :-)

I had pineapple and spinach for breakfast. My twelve year old had four medium sized glasses of it.

I enjoy pineapple so much more now that I let it turn yellow and squishy before cutting into it. It is such sweet, drippy juice. yum!!!!

dude, i've seen your picture. you don't have an ounce to spare man. you are a lean green wheatgrass machine my friend. i want to know how in the world long term rawbies are putting on enough extra weight to look pudgey and if all it is is the green smoothies sign me up! minus the banana though, yuck!

i have some fresh pineapple cut up in the fridge right now and a bunch of baby spinach too AND i just bought a new blender, a 2 speed 800 watt GE on sale for only $40! i'll have to try out your recipe pakd4fun, wonder if the little man will go for that.

My little ones didn't like it as much. They wanted me to add banana.

My 12 year old and I are on the thin side, 5'2" and 110 pnds for me. I think weights, and other muscle building exercises really help us not to look "too thin."

ha ha, i had to add banana for him too but then he loved it. i'm glad, we'll be having that daily for sure now. i'll see how he takes to kale and banana, fingers crossed.
the blender is meh, ok i guess. i'll have to bite the bullet and save up for a vitamix i think.

i'm just under 5'8" and have weighed 120lbs since i was 13. since this baby i am way not as toned as i used to be but hopefully after we move into our new place i can get back into our exercise routine. little is really interested in working out together, he's so funny. imagine growing up with regular family work out sessions and daily green smoothies? my kids are so gonna have a leg up on the rest of their peers as they age. that's a pretty good motivation right there.

Arugula

How do you protect yourself from the sun? I`ve tried using sunscreens and my skin hates them.

Forgive me all for derailing this thread.

Sweetlime I use the high UVA protection synthetic sunscreens from Europe on my neck, hands, and arms. I use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based mineral foundation on my face and wear a wide-brimmed (6"winking smiley visor and wrap sunglasses when outdoors. I also take artichoke extract and drink green and white teas. At night I use tretinoin (an acid form of vitamin A) which undoes some of the damage that accumulated during the day. These all provide some protection. Our diets also provide some protection.

There is a pill called heliocare from the fern polypodium leucotomos which provides about SPF 4. It has some polyphenols that are also found in wild artichoke and wild coffee extracts. Ferulic acid taken orally is also protective.

Oily skin will also provide an SPF of about 2. White or yellow and oily don't crack as fast as white or yellow and dry. In a couple of studies they induced oily skin by giving people high doses of fish oil and saw the same result, about SPF 2.

I used to use sunscreens on my face but I got sick of the zits. Most of the UV filters are oil soluble and require some grease in which to dissolve.

I think it's important to look younger as we age. Sure our insides will be in great shape and it's nice for our outsides to match. I know it isn't fair that some people have a tremendous natural advantage but for the rest of us there is some help.

Raw Vegans shouldn't have to worry about the Sun. The nature of the Diet encourages healthy, youthful skin. SAD eaters need to worry about the Sun. Skin Cancer is running rampant in the community where I live, and everyone blames the Sun, not their Diet.
I say to all my fellow Raw Vegan Brothers and Sisters....enjoy the Sun. It's one of our best sources of Energy......WY

WY, your smoothie sounds like our soups. We add chunks of things and eat it with a spoon. I read something from Ann Wigmore once that you should always add something to chew to your soups to get the digestive juices flowing. I have always wondered if that means smoothies are not as easily digested as chunky soup. Should we add chunks of cut fruit, or whatever, and put our smoothies in a bowl?

Coco, Aren't our kids lucky? I wish I had grown up like them.

This is very true! I have noticed that I am more tolerant of extreme weather conditions. I think there is a transition time though until you aren't completely impacted by the sun going from cooked to raw. If I sit out in the 110 degree central valley California sun unprotected for even one hour, I would come indoors looking like a raisin and in a lot of pain. I do look forward to the day when my body is a mean ...scratch that...i mean loving sun blocking machine though. :-) And maybe I need to start believing that my body is already there...hmmmm.

okay sorry! hijacking again.

my green smoothie was delicious again this morning, already had 64 oz. hope this helps get the train back on track...hehe

Green Smoothies! Mmmm!

My smoothie this morning consisted of 2 granny smith apples, 2 handfuls spinach, 1 handful arugula, a piece of ginger, 1 handful peas, 3 leaves of lacinato kale and 1 spoon of spirulina/wheatgrass powder. It was awesome!

My fruit smoothie was 1 handful soaked goji berries, 1 peach and some cranberries. (IMO-peaches and mangoes are interchangeable). I also had a mango icee (frozen mango water mix).

About the sun/skin damage talk...
My grandma is EXTREMELY afraid that I will get skin cancer from being outside so much. Skin cancer runs in my family (grandma and great grandpa). I strongly believe that the SUN is not the main contributor to the cancer. What you put IN your body is equally important as what goes on your skin. If you eat well, you can see it in your skin. I also take caution to what I put on my skin (cleansers, make-up, lotions) to make sure they don't contain crazy ingredients.
I just know I LOVE absorbing sun rays. It's like a hug from nature! So warm and loving!!

And about the melanin thing.. I have read before that darker skin is not a natural SPF, but it does help convert "bad sun rays" into beneficial sunlight/vitamin D.

This is what Wikipedia says "The photochemical properties of melanin make it an excellent photoprotectant. It absorbs harmful UV-radiation and transforms the energy into harmless amounts of heat through a process called "ultrafast internal conversion". This property enables melanin to dissipate more than 99.9% of the absorbed UV radiation as heat[3] and it keeps the generation of free radicals at a minimum (see photoprotection). This prevents the indirect DNA damage which is responsible for the formation of malignant melanoma."\

Peace and good health to all. To all the green drinkers, bottoms up! :-)

Idarastar,

There are instruments sensitive enough to measure DNA
damage after UV radiation. DNA starts getting damaged
well before any redness occurs. (DNA is not the only
thing to get damaged, there is also damage to the
collagen, the elastin, the immune system, the pigmentation
system, etc.)

Everybody gets it, even with the smallest exposure.

It's just that people with more melanin get less damage,
people with less melanin get more damage for a given
level of exposure.

All skins get damaged, however.

As of yet, there is no known threshold dose and the damage
is cumulative.

Most people when they think of the elderly, they think of
wrinkles and sags. That isn't aging, though. That's the sun.

You can have it if you want it. I don't want it, and I want
for people to know that they don't have to end up that way
if they choose appropriately.

I was in a grocery store check stand line awhile ago and the lady in front of me bought several packages of hamburger. The clerk said to her "the extra lean was on sale right now for less then the regular". The lady said to her "thats OK I prefer the taste of regular". I looked at her and it was like a light bulb moment in that she was VERY fat and in poor health and I perceived that maybe she was hooked on fat as her eating preference choice. Maybe Victoria Boutenko is like that woman ? I don't mean shes eating fatty burger but maybe she is eating lots of fats ? I think if a person eats enough fat they could have weight problems even if the fats come from good sources. My rule of thumb about fats is not to much and only from whole fresh raw natural food sources. If Victoria Boutenko is hooked on fat ? then I hope she overcomes it as she is such a good teacher.

I LOVE SPINACH and BANANAS!!! Best smoothie ever!!!
How many bananas do you use - and spinach? Just curious.

I also love banana and kale - always with chia seeds. I love getting my greens this way, and can't get away from those two combos. Although, in the mornings I have been juicing oranges and blending them with a banana - I feel like I am drinking an orange julius. YUM!!!

I agree!!!

I use about 5 madium bananas and five ounces (one of those plastic containers) of spinach.

Orange juice and bananas sounds so refreshing. What happens if you just blend the orange whole?
