About Indian Restaurant

I don't know too much about Indian Food, but my husband and friends love it.
I've been to an Indian Reataurant 4 times and I kind of like it,but that was before being raw fooder,so when I had to go to see some friends and had just a pea soup and got sick, completly sick (and that was a very fancy restaurant),I am afraid now.
I have a question,if anyone could help me: my boss just invited me and some friends, and his wife to go to his favorite Indian Restaurant. I have to go,so what should I eat? Do they have salads? I know that they have amazing vegetarian food there, but do they have raw food?

If it is anything like the Indian restaurants I used to go to, then not very much raw food at all. They would serve "salad" with dips as a starter - consisting of a bit of onion, a couple of slices of cucumber and a leaf of lettuce.

I would recommend contacting the restaurant before you go and see if they can make a special salad for you.

I worked at an Indian restaurant during my first month of raw. Not too much on the menu was raw, aside from a cucumber/tomato/onion salad and mango salad...

But the guys in the kitchen were really awesome, and would make me custom salads with all the fresh veggies they had: lettuce, cucumber, onion, tomato, cabbage, carrot, mango, and made dressings from different spices, lemon, and honey. They were delicious!

So, if you contact the restaurant ahead of time, I'm sure they could prepare something for you. Most places are also pretty accommodating if you have to order a salad on the spot (raw food = minimal prep!), but it could save you the trouble and the questions if you called beforehand.

You don't HAVE to eat. Tell your friends / loved ones that you are not hungry - which should be true...and that you are there to spend time with THEM. That should be good enough for anyone that cares about you - don't you think?

Indian restaurants usually don't have many raw items in the menu. If you have to eat, have plain naan and a small salad (cucumber, onion, tomato). Other than that I can't think of anything raw in Indian restaurant.

Last time I had a cauliflower dish called Gobi Manchurian and did ok.. I have also become very sensitive and every time I eat out I feel sick. I am Indian and not able to even tolerate the restaurant Indian food. However if I cook the Indian recipe, then I am able to eat and enjoy (albeit small portion).

Good luck to you.

Take care
A Iyer

Dont expect them to accomodate you

eat before, go along.. nibble if you want, dont eat if you want.. just go and socialise.

It dosent have to be about eating.

Thank you guys, very helpfull.I'll call the restaurant and see what they can do for me,and also eat before going there, and try not to eat too much.
The problem about no eat at all is that they expect everyone to enjoy the food, but I can make the "french trick" from the book French woman don't get fat, that is talk A LOT and don't eat anything.I'll try it.
Thank you again,and again.
You always help me with everything that I need.
I love you guys !!!!!!

I also think, for me, whether I would bother to A) have something prepared ahead of time cool smiley talk to the server in front of everyone and explain in great detail my needs or C) just go to socialize without eating, has a lot to do with how comfortable you are with yourself AND the situation.

It's definitely a process... figuring yourself out, figuring out what you want, and then how to interact with other people.

For my first 3-4 months of raw, as far as work went, I was totally in the closet about everything. MAYBE I would have a little salad at work, but I made sure I never had to eat there. Now, I just happily bring along whatever fruit or gourmet dishes I feel like... and people are generally fascinated. I've shared durians, starfruit, rambutans, key lime pie, all kinds of goodness--and people always joke that I should have my own after school special, and ask when I'm bringing more. It's just second nature, and a very positive thing. I don't even talk about being raw, really. I just bring, eat, and share.

The management is also quite interactive and my job is not quite a serious one. For a long time, I observed the waters and figured out how much was worth letting loose.

I know how it can be when you just don't want to have to explain yourself in front of everyone, too. But over time, I'm finding I worry less, just because raw is becoming a part of me, it's part of the whole package, something a bit related to self-acceptance and accepting everyone else.

Ultimately, I'd love to be able to go to a restaurant, not eat, and earnestly say I'm there just for the social aspect. I'm still WAY too externally aroused by food for that, though. =)

here is what i think....dont stress to much about these kind of outings. its not worth wasteing your time on. i hardley ever go to restaurants. but if i do i either bring something of my own like an avacado or something. ( if they say anything my question is " ok i will puit away my organic avacado if you show me your selection of organic produce" they will respond with "we do not have organic" then i simply tell them that that is all i eat. usually they will look at the rest of your table...not want to loose the business and just let you have your way, if thats a bit to foward for you just tell the waitress you want some fruits and veggies cut up on a plate and thats it. if they have any dish with an avacado then just say you want an avacado.
I am ok being differnt. its boring to be like everyone else. you might get some strange looks from your boss and co-workers but who cares its your body and you can choose to put whatever you want in it. If they ask any questions then hey thats great you can spread the word about how great raw foods are.
anyway good luck and dont sweat it too much.

I have no problem in going to a restaurant and not eating. My husband and I take our nephew every moth to an ice cream date and they eat ice cream and I just talk with them and have a good time.Sometimes I go to a pizza date with friends and just talk.No problem for me at all.I don't miss any of this food, but in this situation is a little different,my boss loves this restaurant and want to take us to enjoy his kind of food,so I'll go and talk, that's it.
A friend of mine is a caloric restriction person,so she goes to restaurants order food and don't eat at all, just talk.I feel bad on ordering food and not eating (my recording of my granny on my head "there are people in the world hungry...and you are so luck..."winking smiley comes back to my mind and I feel sooooo guilt.Well,it's time to erase my grammy's voice and let her go.Maybe this is the time for it.
(and I'll bring an avo, Stoner).
