Yeah I agree there is an obvious tone to nik's post and personaly I don't see what the point of pointing this "purist" thing out really was, maybe nik was just wanting to get it off his chest, each to their own is what I say, I think that each individual will interpret this thread in their own way based on their own experience and take what ever they need from it I also think that with the tone of the post it also lends itself for the trolls to creep in and vent or make negative comments....ain't nothing wrong with being a "Purist" and nothing wrong with living your raw lifestyle how you choose, if you wanna eat your raw food off of the kitchen floor, hey....knock yourself out, it's your choice.

If we really want to be "purists", why stop at teflon. What about the fact that the dehydrator itself is practically entirely made of plastic. Isn't that also a bad thing? Probably best not to use it at all.

But for me, it really helps to have a few dried crackers and stuff around for when my family is snacking on tempting junk foods. I suppose I will eventually get to a point where I won't need it, but right now it works for me. When you live with a whole bunch of non-raw folks, there are a lot of temptations around.

I don't really think we are here to judge each other anyway.

Sapphire, you are right. There is always going to be something to pick on when it comes to critiquing someone's diet! I was thrilled to get my VitaMix and then people started talking about how bad it is that the container is made from polycarbonate (or something). :-D I agree with fruitarianfitness that there's nothing wrong with living the raw lifestyle we choose.

Cheers, everyone!

I think raw is a small enough community without dividing ourselves up into 'purists' and non 'purists', low fat, high fat, fruitarian, low fruit, 100% raw, 99% raw, 90% raw etc. Lets be supportive of each other. We have all come to raw foods from a different place, and our bodies and minds may not be in the same place as one another's. We all share the bond of eating raw vegan foods, so why do people always have to get personal, and high and mighty! The world would be boring if we were all the same!

Plus, people have such WILDLY different life stories--it only makes sense that more greens, more fruit, more/less fat works better for different people at different times! The bottom line is everything is fresh.

I think people should be careful not to judge a person that they don’t deem ‘pure’ enough. I respect anyone on a conscious dietary path, whatever level it is. From what I have seen a conscious path with food has the tendency to become progressively refined. People need to work within a framework that is conducive and comfortable for them. My friend is moving towards being vegan. She is reading books about it and learning. She eats cooked food and occasionally meat and dairy. She is learning and changing her diet at a pace that works for her. My sister just became almost vegan. She is not raw and occasionally eats animal rennet-free cheese. I am extremely proud of both and would never criticize either of them. My own diet has begun as vegetarian, then changed to vegan, then mostly raw, now completely raw. It has become more refined over time and has been a unique personal journey. I am sure my raw diet will become more refined over the years as well. Everyone can only move at a pace that is right for him or her. We should offer encouragement not criticism.

joanne

i like your post
if you expand the post to point to ALL areas of life

it is also relevant to:

CLOTHING: how PURE can you get ( pretty difficult unless you grow your own hemp fibers biodynamically and make your own clothes)

VEHICLES: how PURE can you get other than not owning or using one

HOUSING: how PURE can you get . So many things to consider: lumber or no lumber?
solar or wind or ?? for energy ...

the list goes on and on

if one points to ONE thing, why not just purely point to ALL endeavors?

oh yeah, and the PHYSICAL items are just the tip of the iceberg

how about

WORDS: how "pure" are we with our words? are we impeccable in our speech ( no lies, no words intended to harm etc)

BEHAVIOUR: how "pure" are we in our intent and behaviour? Do we do things out of pure altruism or is there a hidden agenda in our interactions that we fail to disclose to those we are interacting with?

THOUGHTS: how "pure" are our thoughts? How noble are our purposes?

So, I don't think it ends or begins with the teflon used in dehydrators.

I liked Joanne's post because ... really, I saw her post relating to all areas of life. Any progress is good.

La V--that's exactly the light that popped on inside my head after I've been doing raw for a while, on the rationale, "it was best for myself" and "best for the earth."

Hahaha. Then the mind says, "BEST, eh? What about: X Y Z this, that, and the other thing?"

And then at first I want to smack myself... and then I get moving and try to make the positive changes in my mind/environment.

It sounds kind of cheesy, maybe (nutty?), but I signed up for this 6 week e-newsletter that sends you all kind of neat thoughts about having gratitude for everything, one a day. I'm about halfway through, and has really helped me focus on appreciation. =)

Why would you eat dehydrated foods unless in a emergency situation?

Makes no sense and all the water your body needs is gone.

No one is perfect, whether in diet or anything else; it is the direction we are going in that really matters: Are we evolving or not? It is the journey. We all started from different points and have our own roads; I think we all know that. The point is, what is each of us doing with what we KNOW? LaV -- love your attitude! This is a great thread -- it's getting all of us thinking in that direction. Everyone's input is great!!!

I eat dehydrated foods occasionally because a) it keeps me raw through periods where I am craving things and b) it helps me get my husband and family to eat more raw dishes.

Dehydrated foods can be delicious. I don't have a dehydrator, but used to work in a raw restaurant that uses them. There are different levels of dehydration, so not all the liquid has to be removed. You can make delicious veggies burgers. We used to dehydrate them just enough so they's hold together, but they were still moist. You can make a bunch of delicious desserts like brownies, cookies and pie-crusts. You can also make energy bars and different granolas, which you can take on the road with you. Another great thing is you can soak nuts and seeds to get rid of the enzyme inhibitors and the dehydrate them so they last longer. You can also make great nut & seed trail-mix that way, like pesto pumpkin seeds, or spicy almonds. These are nice to take camping.

I recently found instructions online to make a solar-dehydrator. I really want to try it. Here are the instructions:
