CONTEST: another name for "raw food diet"
Posted by: Lillianswan ()
Date: June 16, 2006 06:09PM

What are we anyway? I would love it if we had a uniform name for our diet. Right now it is the "raw food diet", "living foods", "fresh foods" ect. Which makes it hard to search for sites, and you also get such lovely hits like sites for raw dog food during a search. On the P.R. side, most people would think of a banana (for example) as a "ripened" food but we would call it a "raw food" which sounds like "raw meat". I would love it if there was one unique, attractive word like fruitarian which described raw foods.

Not that this constest will make any sweeping changes, but I think it would be fun to rename it and maybe this will get people thinking about it.

I think the name should be appetizing (Unlike "vegetarian"winking smiley. Fruitarian is alctually quite good but it isn't boad enough to encompass the whole spectrum.

Please submit any imaginitive entries and vote for your favorite.

What do you tell people that you are?

Lightian

I like this idea. I would say Riparian, but in legal terms that refers to water rights, so I would skip that! What about Rawgeterian?

cfd7f,

I like "rawgetarian". It sounds nice. It made me think that maybe a raw food vegan should be called a "rawgan", but I don't really like the way that sounds. "Rawgetarian" sounds nice.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions. I like Rawgan and Rawgetarian - I never thought of those combos before.

I was looking for historical terms for raw food diets and found this site that mentioned several terms for raw food.:

(1) frugivores

"(an animal or human who takes its nourishment primarily from fruit, nuts and seeds)."

(2) apura = raw foods
apuratrophists = raw foodist

"In classical Greek antiquity, Pythagoras is said by Diogenes Laertius to have insisted that his disciples become apuratrophists and eat their food unfired (apura). So to be a Pythagorean, as many people were in the ancient world, was in sensu stricto to be a vegan raw foodist. (Pliny tells us that most lower and middle class Greeks lived on uncooked barley gruel, which was the staple of their diet.) And the early Buddhists were also said to have been raw foodists, or fruitarians. With a rise in the consumption of animal flesh during the 19th century, the use of cooking in food preparation became more common"

(3) unfired

"In the U.S., one of the earliest proponents of a raw food diet was the 19th century advocate for healthy living (who gave his name to the Graham cracker), Sylvester Graham (1794-1851). In his book, Lectures on the Science of Human Life, he elucidates the reasons why humans should return to eating their food in its unfired state."

I also looked at Latin for inspiration:

crudus : bleeding / raw, uncooked / unripe / unprepared food.

esculentus : succulent, delicious, ripe.

oporotheca : place for keeping fruit. (we all have one of these)

fructus fructus : fruit, profit, enjoyment, produce.

And of course there is "essene".

Of all of theses "apura" has a lasting impresion on me.

Let's try it out:

I'm an apurist.
I'm an apurian.
The apurian diet.
I am preparing an apurian meal.
Are cashews apurian?

Hmmmmm ...

SHD - standard human diet. That's a cool term that makes raw food seem normal and makes SAD seem like the deviant diet. Thanks!

I love Ambrosian, that was kind of what I was looking for, a very attractive term to describe myself to people that would make them want to know more about my diet before they even know what it is. That's perfect! Thanks!

Ambrosia mean "food of the gods" and I doubt any other human diet comes closer to this than raw food. Ambrosia also has this mystical, otherworldly feel to it, not unlike the spiritual high you can get from detox, fasting and raw food.

I doubt any term will replace "raw food" in debates on message boards but now I have a term to call myself in my head that is inspiring to me and makes the food seem more attractive. I tried this with "apura" and "apurian" yesterday and after awhile I couldn't remember how to pronounce it.

Ambrosia tried out in sentences:

The ambrosian diet.
I'm an ambrosian.

About Ambrosia:
[en.wikipedia.org]

In ancient mythology, Ambrosia is sometimes the food, sometimes the drink, of the gods. The word has generally been derived from Greek a- ("not"winking smiley and mbrotos ("mortal"winking smiley; hence the food or drink of the immortals.

"Ambrosia" is related to the Hindu amrita, a drink which conferred immortality on the gods.

In the television series Xena: Warrior Princess, Ambrosia is a jelly-like subtance that is hidden with the treasure of the Titans. Four clues are needed to locate it, and upon eating it, one becomes immortal. Xena destroys it for fear of it falling into the wrong hands.

In the new Battlestar Galactica (where the setting is heavily influenced by Greek mythology) the commonly drunk green alcoholic beverage is called Ambrosia.

Yes, you did win. I wasn't going to declare it right away, there might have been some voting or something. The sole voter after all the entries were in, cherimoya, picked most of the entries. (I also had to think up a prize, a prize which I fear will be imaginary). I think the real prize will be telling your grandkids that you eat ambrosia.

Ceremony

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the winner of the Name the Raw Food Diet Contest, la veronique. I'd also like to thank all the contestants for their very imaginative entries and for their participation in this contest. (audience applause and trumpet fanfare)

Ambrosia is a term which captures the spirit of the raw food diet exactly and in a way that the general public can immediately relate to.

The general perception of ambrosia is of a food which confers immortality to those who eat it and in the words of that great ambrosian Anne Wigmore "In wheatgrass, raw food (ambrosia), and exercise, I found what I feel is as close to the fountain of youth as we are going to get."

I'd like to present the golden ambrosia award to la veronique.
(hands golden mango to la veronique, flashbulbs pop, applause and more trumpet fanfare)

And now, my fellow ambrosians, I ask you to raise your glasses of smoothies and join me in this toast:

"Ambrosia Forever"

It's golden mango season!

How about this:

My fellow abmbrosians, ask not what your body can do for you, ask what you can do for your body.

We choose to cleanse and eat ambrosian not because they are easy but because they are hard.

How about "Low-toxin diet" --- a name like that could have mass appeal, unless of course people are sick of hearing low-fat, low-carb, etc.

I think Raw-vegan is great though, that's the term I use.
