White stuff on outside of dates?

Date: July 16, 2008 06:38PM I have some older dates, and notice that there is white stuff on the outside. What I am wondering is whether this is just a form of date sugar that accumulates as the dates age, or whether it is a form of mold. If date sugar, then I have no problems eating them, but if mold, then I really don't want to get sick! Re: White stuff on outside of dates?

Date: July 17, 2008 01:29AM mine do that too, the sugar crystallizes. On teh organic Trader Joe's ones it says to put them in the fridge after opening. Seems to create even more white stuff... dates.... yummy! Re: White stuff on outside of dates?

Date: July 17, 2008 02:06AM Is there also a mold that sometimes gets on the dates, though? One time I was getting dates at the food co-op and they all had a white coating on them which I had never seen on any dates before. It wasn't crystal-like--it was more like a powder than anything else. I didn't get them, because it seemed like some kind of mold. They must have thought there was something wrong with them, too, because they replaced the entire bin with others the next day.
Lots of love, Wendi XOXOXO Re: White stuff on outside of dates?
