What's your favorite date?
Posted by: Bryan ()

When I first started raw, I liked Medjool dates the best.
But after some time, I found the caramel flavored Barhi date, and it was goodbye Medjool.
That lasted for years, until I found the Deglet Noor, and since then, I've lost my taste for Barhis.

How about you? What's your favorite date?

I've eaten a lot of Medjool Dates over the years, and they're my Favorite. The skin of the others is too 'waxy', or something......WY

mmmmm yum. nice pics bryan. (i'm fasting right now, and i should definitely NOT be looking at this post!)

i LOVE the arizona black sphinx dates, a "rogue" date variety...

from "Save the Date"

Where did Black Sphinx dates originate?

They originated in Phoenix, that we know for sure… but not much more.

One likely legend is that they originated from a rogue date that had fallen from a tree and taken root. Date seeds have a mother and a father so each date seed in genetically unique.

A date that falls from a tree and takes root will be very different from the mother and it will be very different from the father.

To reproduce date palms that are identical to the mother, you cut an offshoot from the mother and plant it in the ground. It’s quite a trick to cut out an offshoot from the mother date palm without damaging the mother.

The rogue date

Okay, now back to the story. It’s likely that a rogue date palm grew up in an unattended area around someone’s home in Phoenix during the 1920’s. It was common back then to have a few date palms around your house.

In this particular case, the area had to be unattended for quite a while because it would take a few years before the rogue palm would be old enough to produce fruit. Eventually, someone discovered the amazing fruit, took offshoots and planted them and Black Sphinx dates slowly became a local delicacy.

One local date aficionado, Scott Frische, says he occasionally finds single Black Sphinx date palms, as well as other rare varieties, growing next to old homes in the older parts of Phoenix. It reflects a time in Phoenix when people would plant dates as well as citrus around their homestead.

For the date connoisseurs out there, it’s likely that at least one parent was a Hayani variety date palm.

Barhi dates are my fav from the ones i've had here in the states.

I spent two months in morocco, where there were sooooo many varieties available, but I don't know the names of them :-(

we don't get much choice here - but a really fresh medjool takes some beating for me. Thinking about it though all the other dates I have tried have been dried so there's no contest anyway.

I tried honey dates, but I like medjool dates better. I've never seen or tried any of the others. I'm looking forward to finding them when we get to California!

Lots of love to you,

Wendi

These pictures are fantastiche
I've only tried medjool sad smiley I'm not a huge fan of them without something mixed with them; same with raisins and other fruits that give off the dried vibe, if that makes sense, haha
