My Dog has been Diagnosed With Arthritis
Posted by: VeganLife ()

We noticed our dog limping so we brought him to the vet. He was diagnosed with Arthritis. He is a Maltese/Bichon cross and a little overweight.
What foods could possibly cure him?

My labrador retreiver was similarly diagnosed years ago before I was into raw. He would eat any raw veggie (except lettuce).. my regret is that I did not give him a steady diet of such foods, instead of a standard cooked diet.

All kinds of veggie juices and shredded pulp.. they don't masticate quite like us.

Foods that contain the nutrients he's lacking in his diet that caused the arthritis in the first place.Like a possible EFA or Glucosamine deficiency.

first off get some weight off of him, that`ll help
next maybe a no grain kibble if you aren`t feeding him a raw prey based diet
grain makes inflammation worse
a glucosamine/chondroiten (sp) supplement because commercial foods that say they contain theses are basically a marketing scam and don`t contain the needed dosages.
google liquid canine glucosamine and there`s a supp which i forgot the name of that`s very good....it`s something K-9 or k-9 something
vitamin c aides in infammation

*HUGS* I'm so sorry to hear about your dog.

Our rescue Doby pup is doing so much better on a raw meat and bones diet. She also likes veggies and fruits, so we let her have them. Her skin problem is getting better, especially now that we're adding fish capsules.

Humans on raw see a vast improvement and cure of arthritis, so I can only imagine it would work just as well for your dog if you are willing to give it a try.

Lots of love to you,

Wendi
XOXOXO

Yeah, get him skinny. Excess weight is tough on arthritis.

Lots of pureed raw veggies.

I also use aspirin 2x/day for my girly. It makes a big difference for her. She's just a couch potato if I don't give it to her. She moves around more if I do.

be really careful and google foods that are toxic to canines. they don`t produce the same enzymes as we do and some vegees are actually pretty toxic and can kill them. onions, raisins, chocolate being among them. i think there`s a pet forum on this site in which you could gain alot of knowledge about canine nutrition. i definately wouldn`t feed them vegan or vegetarian...while they can and will adapt they won`t thrive like they could on a meat based diet. just like we do adapt and CAN survive on a SAD diet it`s not the best for us....same for a canine. their digestive tracks are much shorter and their stomach acids are like 15 times stronger than a humans.

Raw, organic & free-range meats definitely strengthened my cat during a very ill time. I started off with fillets, and then as he got the taste for it (pet food does strange things to animals' taste buds), I started giving him large pieces incl. bone and other gross stuff and letting him do whatever he wanted with it.

big pieces, at least bigger than your pups head
bone intact and raw

google raw meaty bones or raw prey model

Thank you.

I've been giving my older dog yucca as an anti-inflamatory supplement for her stiff joints that has helped. She still limped from shoulder pain that she had for the first few minutes of walking after she had been lying down for a while. The vet recommended glucosamine and chondroitin and that eliminated the limp after a couple of weeks of giving it to her.

This site recommends energy soup (blended greens and seaweed) for pets.

I agree with F1, Raw meat and bones. This site makes a strong case for dogs being total carnivores. In which case you wouldnt want to feed them veggies.

stasia,

i'd prob give my chi energy soup as a treat but
she does quite well on all raw, very NOT vegetarian
meals.

for humans though, i highly recommend the anne wigmore
original green smoothie aka energy soup. i learned to
make it with sunflower sprouts or buckwheat sprouts though,
rather than the more heavier grain sprouts mentioned in the
green smoothie website.

im so glad you mentioned it because i want to get more
energy soup based. i always function so much better eating
green.

fruitgirl (think im now greengirl!!)
