firstly, always confused re:
when does it constitute stealing?
off someones front yard tree?
after its fallen to the ground (front yard)
if tree or plant is in the parking strip?
on someones sidewalk?
if there's a ton of it and obviously rotting?

i admit committing all of the above
so far im still a free girl

anyway this is my most exciting find
2 blocks from home
fell from a tree

what is it?
def smells fruity
could it be a papaya
in no calif?

Ha! ha! Yes. I'm definitely a fruit anarchist / ninja....and have done all of the above! winking smiley Still, I tend to NOT go up into people's yards (and definitely NOT to pick off the tree) although I have made a mad dash or two for mangos or oranges that are on the ground and near the street/sidewalk (usually overhanging)! winking smiley

-Anyway....without too much research....it could be the elusive Paw Paw (check to see if it's got two rows of seeds on the inside...).

The Star Fruit looks like a good guess. It looks just like what Wikipedia shows. California Rare Fruit Growers list it as being possible in the central valley:

[en.wikipedia.org]

Ask the owner of the tree about. If s/he would probably love to talk about it and probably give you the fruit. I often ask people if I can have some of the fruit I've spotted and the majority of the time they are happy to give it away.

ha. i served it to my meditation group tonight
who already thought im a big fruity kook.

one tiny bite and their faces were priceless

i think its an overripe variety of starfruit
mushy and tart

anyway, glad im not the only fruit scavenger here

where do you other foragers draw the line
regarding eating fruit off the ground?
in my excitement i usually forget (ignore)
the truth that altho its organic
its dirty and possibly dogs may have even peed there

but i've never gotten sick though.

how can a fruitarian possibly walk by figs, apples, berries, plums, apples....

If the fruit is fresh....I'm never that concerned....as most fruits from the ground you are not eating the peel anyway. So I just chill and crack open.

well, once i crossed the street and climed an incline to get at an overhanging branch of apple tree (i was very hungry and had just been wanting an apple too!) but these days the only edibles i come across are mulberries over the sidewalk or on a walking path and i just eat as many as i like right then and there. i guess if i saw a tree full of fruit i wouldn't be shy about knocking on the door and asking if i could pick a few. i imagine most people wouldn't mind!

right then and there for me too
unless easy to transport
like apples or oranges

and dave my friend brace yourself
i ALWAYS eat the peel

only place i try to draw the line
is squirrel teeth marks

ohmydog its almost fig time
then persimmons

theres a particular fig tree
just drops huge beauties all day long
im setting an intention right now
to make a gift offering to whoever lives there

I don't think anyone owns food - they just rent it for awhile.
