Sodium occurs naturally in whole foods. We need it, along with a number of other electrolytes, to regulate water balance in the body.

But, there is generally no or very limited need for added sodium, except for extreme cases.

it's a confusing subject
man decides to do a lot of things, like grow and chew tobacco and enslave animals for meat consumption, and start drinking milk

I don't know if salt will necessarily make your diet extremely bad, but you shouldn't have to use a lot of it to flavor food. Or just use dulse or something smiling smiley No one can say whether it's extremely harmful or extremely good to use, we just have to go by trial and error, pretty much. If you like it, then hell, use it

or use some SPIICESSS even better

The body needs salt but it needs salt that has been incorporated into a plants cell structure (organized). Sea salt and other forms of inorganic salt are toxic to the body.

Right. All energy that we receive in chemical form has to initially pass through plants and plant structures. Why should water, vitamins or minerals be any different?

Salt is necessary for life for mammals. Herbivores (and some insects) are known to go to "salt licks". The problem with the modern world is that most processed food has added salt to it (in a very pure form to boot, Sodium Chloride, not the mix of salts like sea salt). It is very easy to get too much salt from a SAD diet if you don't watch the ingredients first.

I just saw a special on tv about salt, and it's actually pretty cool how they get it. There's a bunch of different kind, and some contain trace minerals, some salt even comes from caves of salt. I know it's supposed to have iodine which helps the thyroid to function. Also, I think salt tastebuds can tell you when you crave something salty, what you may be defficiant in, like minerals, for example. Most salt is processed and given a bad name. Perhaps it isn't a necessity, though, but it doesn't mean that it's toxic.

we also have a strong taste desire for sugar and fat. that's because those things are terrific for us in a natural state and quantity that we could obtain on our own before the invention of packaged food. food manufacturers prey on those natural taste favourites to create edibles that satisfy but they lack balance and are therefore bad for you. your mouth doesn't know that though, it isn't designed to think, only to taste.

coco is right on. salt is a refined version of sodium found in foods. like sugar is a refined version of fruit sugar.

That's like asking "If sugar is so unhealthy, then why do we have sugar tastebuds".

Sugar comes from food naturally. You don't have to eat a Hershey Bar.
So does salt. You don't have to eat Potato Chips.
