I haven't seen any good ones in the stores yet. And it drives me crazy when apples are more expensive per pound than chicken. Ah well, hopefully soon.

local organic gala here in virginia are 1.49/lb. me thinks the sub dollar prices per pound of produce is mostly extinct. oh well.

hmmm some ways to make apples cheaper....
lets see, either increase supply or decrease demand.

we could have a jonny appleseed revolution and plant lots of apple seeds. but thats the long term plan. or we could start an anti apple campaign to detract the general public's demand for apples? but that wouldn't be good either.

p.s. i love apples!

Yes, I love apples too. Every year for two weeks only I can get a kind called "sunrise". They are most awesome!

I dig an organic macintosh apple - tastes a million times better than a conventional one. We had a macintosh tree when I was growing up. When I moved away I remember buying some macintosh apples (conventional) at the grocery store. I remember thinking - hey! this doesn't taste like a macintosh. I finally after many years found some organic ones and yes, they tasted as I remembered them to taste.

Well, I was at the market today and the apples were darn disappointing. Anywhere from 1.49 a pound to 3.00 a pound an really crappy looking. Almost seems like they were last year's models. Oh well, maybe next week.

I live in New England-- prime apple country-- but don't generally find apples appealing. I'm trying this fall to get into eating them again. I don't like the crunch, and most of them taste cardboardy to me. So I'll make raw apple sauce out of them in the food processor and add a tiny bit of cinnamon-- I love them that way. I got some Macs (my favorite) yesterday for 79 cents a pound.

Yeah, I've been hitting the orchards since August. I'm a weirdo and like some of them "green" and unripe and sour. Now they're all red and ripe though lol. Unfortunately they're not organic but they taste great. There's definitely a taste difference in the Macintosh apples at the orchard than the "locally grown" ones from 2 states over sold at Whole Foods.

I called the co-op the other day asking what they had for apples..thinking maybe they had some connections to an organic orchard. Nope, they're still selling those disgusting, dried up, blah tasting "organic" apples from New Zealand. Organic isn't everything.

Yeah but what sucks is they picked all the good ones already. LOL. Oh and the place I go to put a damn min on it. $1 lb but you have to pick at least 10lbs.

I'm also in New England and last year a lot of people were posting on craigslist for "free apples" because they basically want you to go clean their yard for them that's covered in apples. Works for me.

wow, its great to hear everyone's view about apples. i personally love them because of the crisp juicy crunch, and the nice balance of sweet and tart that comes from gala apples.

also, i have mixed views on 'honey crisp' apples. the are THE best apple i've ever eaten. to me, perfect, to a fault. it seems too good to be true. they're perfectly balanced sweet and tart, hints of honey and citrus. kinda scary good. it makes me think they are genectically altered to be the super apple that they are, but i can be a bit skeptic at times.

any one know the deal with these honey crisp apples?

the golden delicious are falling like rain here
my neighbors ignore them i suppose due to bruising, cracks and worms

i've noticed something new this year
the bruised parts are super sweet
and im thinking just like how blood rushes to our injuries
perhaps the juice in apples is the same
???

Wow, the kids look so big.

That looks like great fun. I wish we were there. I can't believe how short the trees are. Is that how short apple trees are usually? They look like bushes. They remind me of the blueberry farm here.

You all look great, very happy.

It is funny to see your kids in those warm clothes. We wear those kind of clothes when it is the coldest part of winter. We are still in shorts here.

Love the hats!!!

yes, the trees were very short. i think they prune them to keep them easy to pick but also to make the fruit grow densely. i have seen very tall wild apple trees but the branches get knid of spindly and the fruit sparse.
the hats, i love those hats! they are actually mine and little's but he is too big for his now so they are his and small girl's. i need to make another one for ME!
and it is FREEZING here right now, the temp in my house went down to 63 degrees the other night, brrr. my hands are cold as i type this, i'm going to make a cup of tea just to warm them up. i need some fingerless gloves to do crafting today.

Coco,

Down to 63 degrees F? It has been in the 50's here starting in September. That is unheard down here. Don't think I am complaining. I LOVE IT!!!!! What a great time of year. When I get rich I want to come pick apples with you every fall smiling smiley!!!

You definitely have to make a hat for you!!
