Anyone Else Dislike Green Smoothies At First?
Posted by: orangeflame ()

I JUST got my Vitamix today. I've heard so much about how delcious green smoothies are. Well, I tried two different recipes and I have to say...eh. I didn't HATE them, but I wouldn't call it tasty in a classic way either.

Did they grow on anyone? Is it more a matter of finding the right recipe or honing in on your 'green tooth' over time?

Also, I found that I had to use more fruit than I anticipated in order for it to be..well, drinkable for me..

Anyone out there experience this at first?

I think that's perfectly normal. I found a lot of vitamix recipes were pretty strange at first - it's quite different than juicing. (I got mine about 12 years ago, and I sure hope they have improved their recipe booklet, it was awful!)

As for the greens, you are right, at first, take it easy on the greens, and start with more fruit. I really like peaches or mangoes or oranges. I usually include a banana, sometimes some berries, but as you experiment, you will find certain tastes are more appealing to you than others. Nowadays, I like a lot of greens, it really seems to cut the sweetness.

I think it might explain why you sometimes see an experienced green smoothie drinker offer someone a taste and their reaction is "Yuk, it tastes like grass!" To the person who made the smoothie it tastes delicious!

When I make a green smoothie for my family I put more fruit and perhaps a sweetner in it for them but for me I like lots of greens and a little fruit.

What kind of smoothie did you make?

One of my favorites is frozen banana, strawberrie and loads of spinach. I like mango with kale. I always seem to put a banana in my smoothie because they give it some creaminess. Just experiment and enjoy

The Sweet Fruit I use are Hunza Apricots
and Figs, along with Greens and non-sweet Fruits. I've found
that Bananas tend to make me overeat....on Bananas!!
Green Smoothie making is an Art Form in itself, to be done
with much imagination......WY

I loved them right from the start, except when I put mustard greens in one once-- whew!... very intense.

I would like to try green smoothies but I don't like the fact that blenders brutalize and actually heat the greens. There's no way vitamins can live thru that kind of treatment. So I am going to macerate the greens instead by using the processing function on my oldish Omega juicer and mix with water or juice.

I'd like to know if anyone here has prepared green drinks that way.

I always pour some cold water into my blender first. I would hope that takes care of the heating problem.

The first green smoothie I had was neither tasty nor gross. But by the 3rd one, I knew my life would never be the same. smiling smiley

I love you, Green Smoothie.

Try a mono meal GS and see how you like it. First I put enough water in the VM to just cover the blades and turn it on. Then I add some ice cubes through the top followed by a green like spinach.

A mono-green Green Smoothie!! That sounds like
cruel-and-unusual punishment. But I shouldn't knock it
until I try it.
I like to soak Apricots and a couple of Figs in 3 cups of
water in the Refrigerator for 8 hours (or more). That takes
care of any heat-problem from the high-speed Blending of the
Green Smoothie......WY

I disliked several combinations! I quickly learned that my favorite is banana with any greens, so I normally stick to that, or that with some berries! Oh, I also LOVE watermelon green smoothies in the summer.

I like that. When I run out of Hunza Apricots,
a Banana in each Green Smoothie may work just fine......WY

pineapple is a good fruit for smoothies as it's so strong tasting

I made a smoothie once from starfruit, banana and romaine, it was surprisingly tasty

EZ Rider.....I've changed my Mind. A Liquid
Green Diet may be the best way to live. Anyway, I'm cutting
the Fruit and adding to the Greens.
You drink Wheatgrass Juice.....right?.....WY

I really like the taste of some juiced or blended greens especially romaine lettuce, spinach, and celery but I don't like the taste of wheatgrass juice.

I liked them from the beginning. The most important
thing about Green Smoothies is to 'balance' them. However, many
people here do fine on Fruit with very few Greens.....WY

Been there; done that. Tried recipes too.

The only way I could tollerate them was if it was a FRUIT smoothie with a ton of strawberries and like 2 spinach leaves hidden in it. And then if you get into food combining, greens hidden in fruit doesn't make sense.

It's an acquired taste.
I'm amazed at the number of people here who make Green
Smoothies. I like to make each one a 'complete' meal......WY

I have been making "green smoothies" for about 33 years now...but without fruit
.
Greens with various herbs and other elements made as a drinkable raw soup is much more palatable for some.

It helps to focus on how healthy a food is rather than taste.
Just picture in your mind your millions of cells with happy faces on them as you drink your smoothies.
It helps.

I never mix fruit with my green smoothies (except for avocado and tomato). I take a green smoothie for lunch almost every day. I make it with 2 cups water, spinach, lettuce, kale, cilantro, parsley, other fresh herbs, garlic, ginger, 1/2 avocado, a tomato, sometimes some hot pepper, sometimes 1/2 a cucumber, sometimes some broccoli, and a bit of salt. It is more like a blended salad, I guess. I really like it. I modified a recipe in 'Green for Life'.
