Eating pasta without cooking it?
Posted by: Brendan B ()

I notice there is some pasta out there that is made 100% from live sprouted grains. Can I just let these soak in water to soften them up instead of cooking them? Are these ok to eat?

Hi Brendan,

That would not be considered raw food as the grain has been cooked/processed already before being put in the package. There are raw grain recipes that use or sprouted whole grain seed, which is alive and raw.

Cheers,

Hi Brendan,

If you let them soak in water, they'd just turn into mush anyway, and you wouldn't want to eat them.

Learningtofly has good advice for those of us who like sprouted grains.

I like sprouted kamut. It kind of tastes like wheat, but much better! It's great when the sprout is about 1/4 inch long. You can mix it up with chopped tomato and a little bit of cold pressed olive oil, a little lemon juice and shredded dulse, and/or anything else you like. smiling smiley

Emmmm sounds good! Thanks for the response! How do I sprout kamut and where do I buy it? Shredded dulse is a sea veggie right?

Hi Brendan.

You can first check the bulk bins at your local health food store. If it's not there, the cheapest small quantities that I could find were available through the internet at www.purcellmountainfarms.com. Prices range from 2.95 for a pound to 15.95 for 10 pounds.

Probably the cheapest way to get kamut if you knew for sure you'd eat a lot, would be to do a special order through your healthfood store and get a 25# bag.

For specific details on sprouting kamut, you can go to www.sproutpeople.com. You can buy sprouting equipment from them, or you can just get the sprouting lids and use the wide-mouth glass canning jars available from Walmart. Or you can use any jar and put cheesecloth over the top of the jar and secure it with a rubber band.

Once you've done it, you'll see how easy it is!

I honesty love this this question and it made me smile. You must be a brainy type of guy. I totally could see the logic in this question, and thought it was a good idea, too, until we were informed that the sprouted pasta is cooked before packaged. Darn it!

Sounded like a good idea at the time. oh well. It is going to be hard to find a pasta substitute, but the kamut sounds like a good start.
