Fresh Fig Fetish
Posted by: banana who ()

Last year was the first time I think I have ever had fresh figs. I bought them at Whole Foods, not knowing the first thing about what to look for in ripeness and flavor. I found them to be quite interesting. I bought them again after that somewhere else and they were in bad shape so it wasn't as good an experience. Yesterday I bought them again from WF and the price was $2.50 for a quart and they were ORGANIC! And I ate most of them yesterday and bought more today. I could not stop eating them. It's not like mango where I just go insane with the sweet juiciness, but I love the fact that they are so full of seeds. It's like I know I am eating something very healthy. They were only mildly sweet (they are Black Mission figs--don't know how sweet they normally are at peak ripeness). I am not a big dried fig person but what I love about them fresh is that I feel full. Kind of like when I eat a banana versus a high-water fruit. Does anyone else like figs?

Some might say im hardcore with my figs. I have been buying them wholesale at an organic warehouse in Toronto by the box. I've now bought over 500 fresh figs. Likely ate around 400 this season. Sounds nuts, but it's true! I love my figs.

To me, figs are our human primal food, this is what we grew up on. In the jungle, the giant fig tree is a provider to many various species, like a mother. I had some amazing tree-ripen figs off the trees on Greek islands, totally delicious.

But... but... they're so GROSS! Ugh. To me at least. They taste like dust and seeds and oog. Man, I wish I liked them even a little bit, I read this kind of post every year and try again and rediscover my loathing for the fig anew each season. Darn it all, I am jealous of your taste buds people!

There are dry and seedy figs (often store bought are like this, or unripe figs), and their are ones that are filled with the tastiest juicy natural jam/jelly you could ever find. My favorite are the adriatic figs, that are green on the outside, and a deep red/burgundy on the inside.

Adriatic figs? I'll search for them. I *love* fresh figs, too. I find them very energizing and building. I used to eat a lot of dried, and now I understand why I was drawn to them... there's something about figs, IMO. But, it's true, you have to get good ones.

LOOOOOOOOVE fresh figs; they are so sensual an eating experience! But I eat them only for the brief season when they are as fresh as possible; you can taste the mustiness in them before a mold growth becomes visible. That may be why coco hasn't had a good fig.

That sounds pretty likely tam, especially considering she is in Canada,so it is probably more difficult to get fresh figs considering they go downhill fast after picking, My mom has a fig tree in her yard down in yuba city, and those things are amazing...mmmmmm... but had a store bought one that I found disgusting...

That's got to be it then, I'm very sensitive to mold. Mystery solved!
Curator, even fresh figs in Cali tasted wrong to me.

Yup, good to listen to my body on this one. Smart body!
