Green Smoothies
Posted by: ShineON ()

Ok, Just read Victoria Boutenko's book "Green for Life" in one sitting, really interesting. She praises green smoothies throughout the whole book, with alot of reason. So I make my first green smoothie this morning consisting of:

2 bannanas
1/2 cup of strawberries
1/2 cup of blueberries
2 stalks of celery
big bunch of romaine

Ok, doesn't sound too bad right? I still feel like I'm going to vomit, 1 hour later.. Wheew, anyone else have any luck with these? Any better recipes? Any similar feelings?

How about making the smoothie a little simpler? Like

2 bananas
1/2 blueberries
2 stalks celery

Or perhaps

2 bananas
1/2 c strawberry
1/3 bunch romaine.

Thanks Bryan.

Does celery really provide adequate greens? Just wondering?

Try less greens ShineON... at first, you will probably have less of an appetite for greens, until your hydrochloric acid count increases (or so I have read)...

I just had a smoothie... homegrown lettuce (not my home), bananax3, handful of raspberries.... mmm......

I have heard that the greens in the green smoothie helps with the spaciness that the fruit sometimes can give.. Anyone agree?

sure-I think you can try a lesser quantity of green smoothie. Your body has to slowly heal and be able to absorb all that green goodness.

It sure does help with spaciness because the greens give some sort of balance, at least it does for me. It gives me a boost of energy, also.

you may find romaine to be more palatable than the
heavier greens as chard, kale, spinich.....

in the beginning i had to eat it with unblended
cubes of fruit. now it seems the less fruit at all,
the better tasting to me.

also, i eat mine as a soup with a large spoon,
rather than drinking it as a smoothie.
see if that makes a difference.

Try beet roots and greens and corn. For corn make sure to add the silk.

in a smoothie, if the greens taste bad, you are probably using too much

what about the mixing of fruit and vegetable? these smoothies go aginst everything i've ever heard about food combining. they do seem like a fabulous way to get your greens though....so howabout the combining issue then?

You may want to check out Victoria Boutenko's book "Green For Life". She sheds alot of light on the combination of fruits and greens together. If BLENDED well, before ingesting, you are in essence pre-digesting it with the blender, and breaking the food down in such a way that you are getting alot more effective nutrients out of the foods. It is important to note the subject of this post, "Green Smoothie". It may have been wiser to have named the smoothies "Greens Smoothies". Reason being, the key ingredient is GREENS. What we mean by Greens is actually green vegetables, not starchy vegetables which would not be good food combining with fruits. There seems to be no problem when people combing fresh romaine lettuce, celery, cilantro, Kale, parsely, even celery with fresh organic fruits in a blender. Actually she did an experiment where she got a group of normal civilians to drink green smoothies for an extended period of time, and they all had magnificent health benefits with them. In fact a majority of them continued to drink them long after the experiment was over, giving beautiful testimonies at the end of her book. At the beginning of this post, about two weeks ago, I could barely stomache the green smoothies. They are now a mandatory start of my day. As your stomache gets used to them, you actually start to crave the greens, and I find I increase the amounts of greens in my smoothies. She says it alot better than I do. It's an amazing book that has helped thousands of people, and most people read it in one sitting it's so good.

Peace..

Jeff

Hi folks!!

I'm saving up for a Vitamix blender...in the meantime, my Kenwood processor and Phillips blender will have to do...

Smoothie recipes...at the moment anything goes, because I add a slice of lemon+rind into them all...The lemon brings out the flavour of the fruit in the smoothie.

Smoothie No.1

A handful of bean sprouts - lentil, mung
1 large banana
2 carrots
1 apple
1 tablespoon of Richard Schulze's Superfood (hope I'm not cheating!)
Slice of lemon + rind
1 clove garlic (optional)

Blend in cheap food processor
Blend to a greater degree in Phillips blender

If not enough water, add something like rejuvelac or kefir (although that's not raw), or just plain spring water.

For people who want to have a substantial smoothie, add 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds... This addition makes a great breakfast, especially 1 hour before a gym workout.
