raw PB; aflatoxin

HIYA!

I put this post in the recipes and food preparation forum some days ago but haven't gotten any responses so I'll try it here. I suppose it's not strictly appropriate for this forum but ....

HIYA!

I wanna make raw PB but I haven't found a way. I bought a small nut butter making machine from a raw foodist on eBay. The listing says it works best with roasted peanuts but I didn't think it wouldn't work at all with raw peanuts.

I tossed some in with the skin still on it but the machine acted like it was constipated! What came out was more like a pate than peanut butter. So I soaked some nuts, removed the skins, but it was pretty much the same story.

So, I wonder if anyone has some ideas.

Maybe a different variety would work better. I don't know what the name of this variety is. I live in South Korea and all I know is that they're called peanuts, and that they're grown here in S. Korea.

I have a blender but I haven't had any success with that either. But if anyone can tell me a way then I'd be happy to at least consider giving it a shot.

One more thing. Is aflatoxin yellow? After soaking peanuts they get yellow stains. I've read this "might" be aflatoxin. I have tried Google searches but haven't found an answer to what color aflatoxin is.

Thanks much, Troy.

TroySantos,

If you looked in the recipes forum, you might have come across a thread about raw tahini, in which I and another poster discussed the problems we were having grinding hazelnuts down to make raw "Nutella." Grinding them soaked resulted in gumming up of the works of the machine used, and grinding them dry was only slightly easier. I ended up having to use multiple devices: first a food processor, then a Champion juicer with the blank plate installed, and lastly a stick blender to finish the paste off. It was only slightly grainy at the end. I think some nuts emulsify well, like cashews and soaked almonds. Others don't. Remember that peanuts are actually legumes, so you may want to treat them like lentils.

As for aflatoxin: I, too, couldn't find anything on a yellowing of the flesh indicating fungus. A test would be to soak the peanuts in water with a small amount of food grade hydrogen peroxide or true colloidal silver for a while, and see if this has any effect. I personally don't eat raw peanuts anymore for this reason; I've cut back on all nuts, actually. But if I were to eat raw peanuts, I'd try a sanitizing soak first to see what's what. I kinda try not to ingest anything that makes my primordial memory go, hmmmmm . . . . smiling smiley

Raw peanuts make everyone here but my husband sick. I don't think they are healthy for us at all.

I have used a food processor to make cashew butter, hempseed butter, etc. without a problem. Try those or another seed?

Thanks for all the responses.

Tamukha, I did look in the recipes section. This post was originally put there. I didn't see the thread you mentioned. I did a search and found something. Seems to me there was something that popped up from the search that was about tahini. I didn't pay much attention because it didn't seem relevant. And boy o boy, did you ever jump through hoops to make that "Nutella". Hope it was worth the effort.

Troy.
