Wow I found raw chick peas at the Mexican market last night. They are awesome! Sweet and green and tender.I think I might make hummus! Anyone else ever try them? I have never seen them before.

They were fresh? Cool...

bercause when they are dry, and have to be soaked and sprouted, the taste has to disapear behind lots of dressings to become palatable...

burk, that starchy bean taste is horrible (sorry, don't want to upset anyone)

Jehosaphat, Wendy! It's like flora from another planet, a strange and mystical one! I am baffled. I'm in Detroit, which is chock-a-block with Arabic shops, and among their myriad chickpea preparations, I have never encountered these. They look like the youngest form, like spring petite pois or fava beans. Mexican store, you say? They must be grown somewhere nearby. I wonder if there's a source for chickpea seeds, from which you could grow your own? Fascinating. Thanks for posting.

They are green! Now I understand why they are called kikkererwten in Dutch: kikker means frog (erwten = peas) !
My son just asked me Yesterday why they are called that way (-:

They taste kinda fresh, slightly sweet and tender. I tried making a hummus out of them. Bitter tasting udsng the tahini recipe I used to use with canned chick peas. I tossed it. For me these are best eaten alone.

This si what they looked like in the store (in their pods).

I had those one time it was the right time of year in May at the big Flea market in San Jose,Ca I bought some on the vine fresh never to be seen again until today on living food great photos.
Where I live and travel to they dont grow or consume much garbanzo beans.

I have bought garbanzos sprouted before but very rare to see them like.

Cherimoya,

Love Peace and Happiness,

Wow, they look good. I love going to ethnic stores and checking out different raw foods. You almost feel like your in another country. Only wish I had a guide to explain what was what. And if you try to ask someone a question, I usually get back "no English" sad smiley

I just ground them with 2 Tbl of tahini, some garlic and lemon juice. It was bitter. It's not bitter when I used to use the canned beans. I'm going to stick with eating them straight. :-)

hi wendy

YEAHHHH!!! i never saw em fresh too

how totally and unbelievably refreshing to see a pic of them
and know u can eat them fresh just like that smiling smiley
without pulverizing them into a hummus

but it is interesting why it would taste bitter after u make it into a paste
and not bitter if u eat it straight

maybe the garlic and lemmmmmmon juice is what is making them taste bitter
think so?

so interestingsmiling smiley

I added tahini too. Maybe they don't like to be processed! :-)
