New to sprouting- what went wrong with it?

Im new to raw foods concept and I am starting to sprout/soak some of grain and seeds for my first time. The first time I had my Mom show me how to prep the grains and start the process, since she is much more seasoned in the subject. The first time she showed me, using her "sprout master" containers, and about two-three day later, they were covered in green mold. Then I came home and tried it myself- which was successful! YAY! The second time of trying it myself, it failed; I made sure not to have too much water/moisture, and I only rinsed it once per day. This time it molded again. What am I doing wrong? I have researched and can't find any other answers except that there is too much moisture, but I tried to control the moisture... Frustrating.. Help?

Whenever I make sprouts, I soak them first overnight. Then, after I rinse them, I always leave the containers upside down so they can continually drain between each rinse (using a porous cover of course, like a sprouting lid, a wire mesh, or cheesecloth) I usually rinse the sprouts at least twice a day, sometimes 3 or 4. I've never had moldy sprouts, so I guess that works.

I also soak them overnight beforehand. Some sprouts require more than one rinse per day, others do not like excessive rinsing. As suncloud mentioned, the need to be able to drain well, good air circulation.

I have done a "ton" of sprouting, and the only time I get moldy ones are when I get too busy for a day or so & neglect to rinse them.

Otherwise, they always come out beautifully, and make great sandwich filler, great in juices, etc.

Yes,
Rinsing and draining well seems to be the answer.
I make alfalfa sprouts in simple jars with mesh lids and never have mold, but then again, maybe grains are a different story.

A longshot may be that the seeds themselves are precontaminated or the sprouting environment may contain microscopic spores. For example, I can sprout successfully in the kitchen, but I would only sprout seeds my the dank basement if I wanted to poison myself. Which I don't : )

My ideas:

- some seeds require darkness for sprouting, so I do them in a sprout-maker made from pottery's clay, looking like this:

- the advantage is, that it does not stay so humid inside, but the disadvantage is that the clay can fungal/mouldy, too.

- i rinse my sprouts twice a day

- sprouts from which I eat the green parts only (like cress, for instance), I grow on a tissue / napkin on a plate
