The taste of onions... addictive?
Date: January 04, 2010 04:38PM

Okay, over xmas I stuffed myself silly with (vegan) sweets and stuff and am now clawing my way back to a healthy diet.

There is a bag of onion rings (crisps) in the kitchen that I am trying to restrain myself from eating. They don't have MSG in them, so aren't especially bad as far as crisps go, but man, they are calling to me the same way caffeine does!

It might be purely psychological, as recently I realised that onions were having a bad effect on my digestion and made a mental note to cut down on them.

Also, what are the nutritional benefits of eating onions? Do the side effects outweigh the benefits?

Eating onions makes me smell and gives me a terrible headache! I used to adore them, but I now I think they just poison my system. I think you'd be much happier if you passed them by.

Hi!

I have never heard of onion crisps; you say they are in a bag and also called them onion rings...the fried kind? I bought some frozen ones from Whole Paycheck when they were on sale: OMG! Totally, completely addictive. I would never have looked at the onions as the junkie-inducing behavior, but more likely the breading...that evil breading, LOL.

I have admitted to not being a raw fooder like most on here appear to be. My aim to greatly increase my raw food intake and I am hanging with folks like the ones on this site in order to assist in accomplishing that goal. In terms of onion's properties, I believe it's the sulphides that give it its stank. But that phytochemical has various health benefits. [lifestyle.iloveindia.com]

Onions are high in sulfurs that help maintain pH balance in the body and kill pathogens, and high in glutamates that make us feel satisfied appetite-wise. If onions disagree with your system, your system doesn't need them, right?
