Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

Date: February 17, 2010 01:21AM I was at the health store today and bought organic cacao powder. I didn't think to see if it was raw. There was nothing on the label that said 'raw,' so it's obviously not. I Googled 'cacao' and they redirected to 'cocoa.' So it sounds to me that cacao is nothing but cocoa powder with the prices jacked up! If someone knows anything more about this, please let me know. I think I'm going to return this stuff since it's not raw. Re: Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

Date: February 17, 2010 01:22AM Oh, and apologies for that convoluted title. LOL--I'm getting a little punchy, I guess. Yikes! Re: Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

Date: February 17, 2010 01:32AM Cacao is Spanish for cocoa. The raw cocoa has been recently renamed cacao. I suspect the powder is overpriced because people are willing to pay more for cacao, even if it is the same thing as cocoa. Re: Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

Date: February 18, 2010 07:30AM Hi.
I believe cocoa powder has had most of it's cocoa butter removed. In cacao powder the butter is in there, so it is not the same. Better chocolates have extra cocoa butter added, so maybe cocoa powder is a byproduct they can sell for less. Re: Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

That would make me feel a little better for the amount of money I paid! Re: Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

Date: March 04, 2010 04:54AM I've had Raw Cacao Powder from Sunfood.com and compared that with Dark Cocoa Powder. MAJOR difference between the two. It was like the difference between eating a conventional waxed apple and an organic apple picked right off the tree.
The best way to make cacao powder is to use a coffee grinder from raw organic cacao beans. But buying it pre-made is a lot more convenient, for sure. Best, Mark Re: Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

Date: March 07, 2010 07:42PM I thought raw cacao powder was processed at much lower temperatures ie 120 than cocoa where the temperatures are very high Re: Does cacao=cocoa which is overpriced 'cause they are calling it cacao?

This means it's not raw or else they'd broadcast it in big letters. I got fooled by the word 'cacao.' Oh well, I didn't bring it back... ![]() Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
