Fuzzy almonds...

I don't get it, come to think about it. I have seen the ones in a shell and don't understand what the deal is on these hairy ones. Does anyone have a clue?

Ha ha...no pics and I didn't buy any. I should have but it was pretty crazy in there...very crowded and I just didn't know exactly what they were. They were fuzzy like velvet and no hard shell. It reminds me of fresh garbanzos, if you have ever seen them. They have a papery husk like tomatillos. I have never bought fresh garbanzos; just the dried ones. The sign for the almonds said "fresh almonds."

Yes, fresh raw almonds - not dried - yum, yum, yum.

Those are what I had bought - found them to be nice and sweet, not jellish, just soft - didn't eat the green fuzzy part though - just peeled them and ate the seed inside.

Wow! I never even thought of cranking up the old Google and trying to find an image of it. I read the info and what I cannot understand is the difference between the "fresh" almonds and the ones with a hard shell. Or perhaps they are a different type? I know, I know, Google is my friend...Thanks for that!

Update: the green fuzzy part is on the outside of the shell. [en.wikipedia.org]

It's just strange because the almonds I saw didn't look big enough to have a shell underneath. I have shelled almonds; I know how thick the shell is. This looked like green velvet over a shelled almond. Oh well, the next time I go to Devon Ave. (Chicago street with many Indian/Middle Eastern vendors) I'll get some!
