I'm kinda going nuts finding good nuts lol If anyone has knowledge of a really good source of nuts please post it here. I am not new to the site but have been very ill and have to work a 40hr per week job, so I don't have the energy to get to the library to use the computer. I really need the highest quality products, I will share my sources also if wanted.

I find the nuts from Living Tree Community Foods to be exceptional- [www.livingtreecommunity.com]

There's also a web site www.nutsonline.com which is extremely fast in their ordering process, but I don't think that their stuff is quite as high quality.

What nuts specifically are you looking for?

nutsonline says "raw" almonds = 6.99 per pounds

treeoflifecommunity has their "raw" almonds at 14.99 per pounds

hmmm... more than TWICE the amount

and everyone knows by now that codex says that raw almonds are a "no no"
so they must all be heated and STILL labeled "raw"

i'm guessing that since tree of life knows something about raw, their price reflects something that nutsonline doesn't

i think tree of life has good products however i am a bit dismayed by the fact that they steam their cashews and still label it raw

i don't care if it is "quickly" steamed

they claim that it is not boiled but steaming is extremely high heat amount

they should just be truthful and label it "cooked'

but i think all their other nuts are raw

La Veronique: Read the whole thing: it says that the 6.99 ones are pasteurized and then there's a link for the organic ones that are really raw. Oh, and they are from Spain, so I can get some from Trader Joe's that are raw for a lot less. And the pound of almond butter is almost $20! I am sorry but that is too much. Maybe some have trust funds or something but I am looking for really raw almonds at less than $10 a pound!

okay, read it and see it now

i am wondering why raw nuts cost more

this makes no sense

if i were to grow almonds raw

that would be less work then to grow them then roast them, steam them, salt them etc. etc.

doesn't heating cost MORE than just leaving them ALONE?

One would think so, but in this system if it's good for you they make it more expensive. It's a conspiracy against raw food.
Anyway, Living Tree can be very expensive, it's true. Here's a farm of raw foodists in California that offers truly raw almonds at $11 a pound:
[rawfromthefarm.com]

I just bought truly raw (Italian) almonds from a farm in New York called Turquoise Barn at about $7 a pound, but you need to buy 25 pounds or more to get that cheap of a deal (I did a group purchase for the raw foods meet-up around here).

It's called Supply-and-Demand. There are probably
one million more roasted nuts sold than raw.....WY

Ha-ha, agree with Wheatgrass Yogi--not a conspiracy, just good ol' capitalism!

It's weird how many complex things cost more than their plainer, less labour and energy intensive versions. It's never made a lot of sense to me but it's common.

I was kind of joking. It's really because the companies can get away with it. Raw is seen as a special commodity, even though it's simpler. Just because a lot more roasted nuts are made doesn't mean it's cheaper to make them, so supply-and-demand as an explanation doesn't quite make sense. It's just that people will pay more for what they perceive as a higher-notch product. But anyway...

spoilage is allot more common with raw nuts and other raw products too though, meaning their overhead is higher...unless they sell spoiled nuts to people... storage is most likely more expensive as well, but that is only a guess on my part, it just seems like raw nuts would be far more sensitive to environmental factors around them than roasted are, so would probably have to be shipped in climatically controlled trucks/boats, unless they are still in shell... which would still be more expensive to ship per nut.

correct term (according to Wikipedia). All I know is many
more people want their Nuts roasted (and salted), thereby
bringing the costs down.....WY

that is most likely about 90% of the reasons for the higher cost

Well, I can't fathom why they do, because raw nut butters have always tasted better to me, even before I was raw. I think most folks just haven't tried the raw versions....

Yeah, well peanuts are different. I don't do peanuts... but almonds and macadamias, etc., definitely better raw, at least I think so. And I bet the vast majority would think so too, in a blind taste test.

Does anyone know about Country Life? One of our little health stores sells them and keeps them in the fridge but they didn't know if they were "really" raw.

I Love raw almonds, I should get some, and walnuts too, when i go to visit my grandpa this September... and try to convince him to offer them online to people for cheap, since usually allot more goes bad than we ever eat...
