Date: December 01, 2010 06:35AM I wish I could remember where I read this, but it was many years ago. I recall reading something that said that even the NCI who put out the 5 fruits/veg a day to prevent cancer message knew that wouldn't help. I think they found that as a preventative you needed 9 and much more if you already had cancer. They had issued the recommendation based on what they thought was reasonable for most people to get, not on what their studies found.
I can't find articles corroborating this, but there is a new trend toward upping the recommendation to 9. [www.bmj.com] Re: Study says 5 fruits/veggies a day will not ward off cancer

Date: December 01, 2010 11:37AM I say its aload of crap lol, eating nutrient dense foods rich in anti-oxidants, phytonutrients and so on have proven time and time again for there beneficial properties.
Many cancers are caused by viruses, a weak malnourished immune system allows these type of pathogens to take hold. Not to account many of the flavinoids, phytonutrients etc contained in fruit and vegetables are anti-viral. Id be more confident of not getting cancer eating 5 a day than giving up on fruit and veg because of this study anyway. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/01/2010 11:37AM by powerlifer. Date: December 01, 2010 02:03PM From the article:
"He added that while fruit and vegetables have other health benefits, for those who already have a healthy diet, ‘the evidence does not support eating a lot of fruit and vegetables to reduce the risk of cancer’." How can you have a healthy diet if you aren't already consuming AT LEAST 5 servings of fruits and vegetables?! Other than that, I agree. Eating all the fruit and veg you can stomach won't do diddly squat if you are still eating meat, dairy, eggs, processed foods, drinking, smoking, taking drugs, not exercising, not getting enough sun, not sleeping, etc. on a regular basis. Date: December 01, 2010 02:19PM The research being studied is of varying sources and eras; thus the study results cannot be considered as sound. Next! Re: Study says 5 fruits/veggies a day will not ward off cancer

Date: December 01, 2010 04:04PM It seems to me that the people doing these "studies" aren't
taking into account whether that serving of fruit or veggies is RAW or not. In fact, in some cases (such as tomatoes) so- called "researchers" claim there are more nutrients in the cooked varieties. (As if nutrients alone is the key to health.) And I would think you'd need more than 5 servings of RAW food per day to significantly reduce your risk of cancer or other seriously debilitating diseases, particularly to the extent your habits also include typical SAD items. (Of course, the problem with eating more than 5 servings is that it typically reduces how many SAD items you can still stomach because you're filling up on fruits and veggies.) Interestingly, something such as "obesity" is considered a greater risk, as if the lack of eating fruits and vegetables isn't a major contributor to obesity. There seems to be easier to simply blame "obesity" than focus on what actually contributes to health problems (i.e. the SAD items themselves). As if taking in excess calories is the main problem, not one's poor, health- demoting choices at the dinner table. By concluding that 5 servings seems to not be adequate to do much to promote health it could get researchers to eventually follow the path of, and ultimately recommending, a RAW diet as protection against cancer (as well as all forms of disease). But whether that takes 10 years or 20,000 years remains to be seen. Steve [www.meetup.com] [www.rawgosia.com] Re: Study says 5 fruits/veggies a day will not ward off cancer

Date: December 01, 2010 04:34PM They also said this:
"He doesn’t, however, rule out that evidence of the ability of fruit and vegetables to ward off cancer will emerge in the future." ...hehe, what is that? It is not so much what you eat, it is what you DO NOT EAT that makes you healthy. Same is with the water. It is not all the minerals and nutrients...it is the ABSENCE of chlorin and fluoride (and other chemicals) that makes the water healthy. Re: Study says 5 fruits/veggies a day will not ward off cancer

Date: December 01, 2010 09:22PM I agree with Swayze. Good habits do not negate the bad. Good foods do not negate the bad foods.
Eliminate the bad habits, the unhealthful foods, and then have as many servings of fresh fruits and vegetables needed to feel well fed, and one will see spectacular results. Re: Study says 5 fruits/veggies a day will not ward off cancer

Date: December 02, 2010 10:36AM Im not sure i totally agree with that, a good diet rich in fruits/vegetables can offset some potential bad additions to diet/lifestyle.
A study i read recently was a good example, smokers who didnt have a diet rich in vitamin A got smoking related conditions such as emphysema whilst those who did, never had problems with it. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
