Is anyone thinking of moving to Vilcabamaba?

I thought it was just a couple of people who had done so but apparently it's a pretty large community of raw fooders. I cannot recall what the requirements are to become a permanent citizen. I think you have to show means of support but I suppose if you are receiving Social Security that would suffice. Apparently it's pretty impossible to get a job there; you have to have an online business or something. But I wonder if you had a certain amount of money in the bank if that would be acceptable...From what I hear, you can live on very little money! Produce is very cheap (plus you can grow lots of stuff) and so is land or rent!

How could you receive social security and live in another country? I don't think that works...
I'd love to move away someplace warm and raw friendly.

I think I would prefer Sardinia if I were moving to a Blue Zone.

I think you can! There are plenty of American ex-patriots who live in Mexico, Costa Rica...Do you honestly think they'd give up their benefits to live there? It's not like being on welfare or anything. This money is based upon what you put into it (at least a percentage). So it's not going to disappear should you choose to live abroad. (If I am wrong, someone correct mewinking smiley)

Ah, I see.
Paul, what's a blue zone? And is there a particular reason for that location you mentioned, have you heard good things about it in terms of raw, affordability, access to produce etc?
The one big concern for me is access to medical care for the kids. When little broke his arm and dislocated his wrist we had to be ambulanced into the next town, it was a total nightmare. I always want a good hospital not too too far away. That was an awful night, oh la.

Coco,

Sorry, the term Blue Zones comes from the book of the same name published late last year by Daniel Buettner. The book case studies parts of the world where people live incredibly long lives with low stress. Okinawa is a blue zone as is Sardinia. And to my suprise, Southern California. I think I'd take Sardinia though. It's the one Blue Zone where the men live about as long as the women, believe it or not.

Paul

banana, you do lose social security benefits if you are no longer a resident of the U.S>, to remain a resident you have to pay rent or own a home in the U.S., and If I remember right, stay there 6+ months per year, otherwise you are no longer a resident, and not able to receive benefits... at least this is what was told to my father when he was thinking of moving to Canada, that is the only reference for information I have though.

So he probably has dual citizenship anyway? Or is he like that man I read about who is in his 90s and found out that he was actually born in Canada and is not a legal American citizen!

Johnny Lovewisdom lived in Vilcabamba for many years. The best feature is not how inexpensive it is to live there, but the warm climate and high altitude. Supposedly, the people in the mountains live longer lives in the warm, Pure air than their counterparts do in the valley regions.....WY
P.S. You wouldn't be happy there.

Does it count if you own a trailer (mobile home) and park it at the cheapest (maybe free) spot in US? You are listed as the owner...

I think it's not too hot there? Like maybe the same as San Diego where it's always 70 degrees...I like 80s, though, in the summer. Nothing like a nice, low-humidity summer daysmiling smiley

Fruit is supposed to be way cheaper--avocados are a fraction of the price. And huge mangoes...I'd go just for thatwinking smiley

Matt Monarch said in a video that if you have 175K you can buy land and build a nice house. If that is true, prices must have sky-rocketed! I don't know if people remember when Matt and Angela were putting some of their adjacent land up for sale and they were asking 35K for a nice-sized piece.

That doesn't sound so cheap after all. Maybe the recent publicity has many people looking for land there. Do Matt and Angela have property there??

Yeah!!! Check out rawfoodworld on Youtube! They have all sorts of videos on their homestead--it's really beautiful and fascinating to see all the stuff they have done. I am in awe, to be honest. But in the early days last year they had these parcels and they were pretty cheap.
