Date: October 25, 2006 01:35PM We are currently living beyond our means - our ecological footprint is 25% greater than the ability of the planet to recycle our waste, according to the report.
Chart showing our ecological footprint v. the biocapacity of the planet In the 11 years after Rio, between 1992 and 2003, measured in constant global hectares, the average per person footprint in low- and middle-income countries changed little, while the average per person footprint in high income countries increased by 18 per cent. Over the last 40 years, the average footprint in low-income countries hovered just below 0.8 global hectares per person. The energy footprint shows the largest per person disparity between high- and low-income countries. This is in part because people can eat only a finite amount of food, while energy consumption is limited primarily by consumers’ ability to pay. From [assets.panda.org].
