blood type diet

Hi
I am new here, and trying to go raw... tough after following the btd strictly. However, I am a o- and I eat fish right now.

I know there is a lot of debate about the btd, so I would love other thoughts. as an o, I am suppose to do best on a high protein diet.

Any thoughts?

There are older threads on these boards in which we mostly agree that the blood type diet, while an interesting hypothesis, may not work for most people.

michelemm, how have you been doing on the Blood Type Diet? Are you healthier now than before? Is this the healthiest you have been?

Thanks for asking. I guess it is how we define healthy. I was vegan for 15 years, but also I struggled with an eating disorder for many years... I started the btd diet, but always felt "guilty" eating any animal flesh, like something did not feel right.

On the other hand, I had alot more energy, my skin glowed and people commented on how great I looked with a little more weight. I was diagnosed with celiac about8 years ago. Also, I have chosen a dairy free life for about 8 years.

In general, I am healthy. I do yoga about 6 times a week and cardio for 3 times. At this time, I am in a doctoral progam, work part time and I am a TA!

Lots going on, but I really want to stick to this once and for all... but do it healthy.

Michele,

I would have a hard time reconciling my diet with my ethics/values if they did not correspond; this can be extremely psychologically taxing. With all of the things you are doing right--congrats on your academic achievements!--it's prudent to survey what you are eating and drinking, but also what belief system you are aligning yourself with, to shore that up at this time, as well. Good luck figuring out what works to your best advantage, and remember to be kind to yourself smiling smiley

I guess I want someone to tell me why I feel like I have more groundedness when I eat fish?

This makes me always revert to "is there any validity in the BTD?"

Hopefully, someone else can comment on any experience or thoughts.

I am so flummoxed by a situation where your mind and heart find certain foods objectionable - yet you feel physically much better when you consume that food. That is just kind of awful and I wish there was some resolution for those of you who experience this.

Sometimes I run into articles written by the Weston Price Foundation people and they attribute everything that might be "wrong" with vegans, vegetarians or rawfooders to their not following WP's "traditional" dietary recommendations. They seem to forget that we aren't living in some isolated neo- or paleolithic village or mountain area, etc. where life was 100% different from ours. If we can't transfer ourselves back in time and space to those societies, why should we copy their diets 100%.

Michele, if you feel better eating fish I don't think that necessarily has to do with blood type diet. I really don't. The expert say, and I believe them, that flesh food is easily digested, that you don't even have to chew it thoroughly for assimilation to take place. So maybe you have some digestive challenge you aren't aware of regarding plant protein. That is just my guess.

You may want to try to add hemp protein in juices. This would raise the protein level. I know I felt better when I increased protein (work out a lot)

The reason you feel more grounded when you eat fish is likely from the concentrated protein and fat content.

I still feel an all raw diet is far too low in quality protein and fat overall, especially longterm to be healthy.

The problem is that most cannot eat the quantity and volume of fruits and vegetables needed to achieve the RDA for protein.

There definitley is not enough fat in fruits or greens though.

Our physiology is sufficiently different from that of a cow--they have more than one stomach, for Pete's sake--so that definite comparisons aren't sensical. You may as well compare us to brontosaurus!

I did answer the question in the cows are much different in anatomy. For a start a cow has 4 stomach comparments and they have a very versatile digestive system.

Cows also regurgitate and rechew their food to further break it down and allow for more efficient digestion in the stomach.

Cows can also break down cellulose and other indigestible fiber into energy, something a human cannot do.

End of the day we are not cows and are vastly different from an anatomy and physiology perspective for comparison.

the RDA is absurd

the WHO (world health organization) study showed that
.36g/kg is sufficient

that is only 19 grams of protein per day for a 120lb person, for example
the fact that they ignored their own data and inflated the numbers is another story.

Which is?, most people use the low fat cooked vegan studies by McDougall and so on as their comparison in the hope that it would also transfer over to raw, these studies were done with a much wider range of food groups and foods than just fruit and greens, which in my opinion is not healthy or a complete diet.

so, basically the btd is a joke? Why did I lose alot of weight in my belly though?

I will post another comment about weight because I want some thoughts on body image and so forth... I think the lo carb thing really messed me up.

I have looked over the blood type diet book briefly and noticed that it eliminates processed foods. I think most people who eat packaged foods, like cookies, etc., and then go to NOT eating those things, will probably lose weight?

Hi thanks for your thoughts and insight, I will look him up. I guess I do see something in the btd, but it could be that i am celiac and seemed to have more energy on a lower carb diet. However, this might just be because it is healthier overall than the SAD diet.

the trick is to do things and see how you feel. Start "pure," then if you think you don't feel like you are supposed to, then try something adding else (like a tea spoon of hemp protein, or even supplements) and see how that makes you feel. You cannot based on what works for other people.

Thanks Panchito. I like the idea of pure. I also need to cut out the olive oil and lemon juice for salad dressing. I am starting slowly to get back to my old regimen, but it takes time and I need to be gentle to myself.
