DRAGONFRUIT!!!!!

I can't believe that it took going up to Devon Avenue (big area for Indians and Middle-Eastern peeps) to find this elusive fruit. smiling smiley And the price? $3.99 a pound, which translates to about $2.69 for one the size of very large avocado.

I will update when I slice into this beautysmiling smiley

Meh. Just meh. It looks cool but is rather bland-tasting and I don't think I got a bad one. I went online to make sure it was ripe enough to cut open and found out that it's supposed to be from the cactus family and sure enough, it tastes like tuna (that prickly pear thingie!). And tuna's cheaper so I will go with that in the future.

Tesco have them in them from time to time. They are bland tasting, even more disappointing as you normally expect more looking at the bright colours of the fruit.

That's great! It's really hard to find dragonfruit in our area as well. And you got it with a cheaper price. That's nice!

Cheers Chat, damn they sound abit disappointing. Id love to try a fresh mangosteen or something exotic. I wasn't impressed with my first durian tasting session.

Here's a picture of Dragon Fruit in bloom:

"The round flowers are the size of dinner plates, with a sweet smell that appeals to bats and moths. Their wide, cupped shape is thought to reflect the signals of hungry echo-locating bats more than other flower structures."

I love them. The flavour is very subtle, not a big wow in the mouth but so delicate and mild. Mangosteen are very flavourful. Quince, no. You have to cook those, they are impossibly untasty raw tongue sticking out smiley.

Reminds me of a joke I heard a long time. Stop me if you heard it already smiling smiley.
Homeless chap walks up to the back door of an Inn named"George and the Dragon" and asked the Innkeeper's wife for some food. The woman glanced at his shabby, dirty clothes. No, she shouted. Could I at least sleep in your stable? he said. No, she shouted again. The hobo thought for a moment then said D'ye suppose that I might have a word with George?

Yeah, I'm a lover of sweet fruits and when I heard accounts of the dragonfruit not even being that sweet, I was turned away. They are beautiful though; hard to pass up. Sometimes I will buy them only to put them in a smoothie just so I can say I "ate" dragonfruit.
