Coconut palm sugar

Hi guys-

I ordered six pounds of this stuff from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. I am not sure if I knew it would not be raw but I thought it was going to be blonde. This has a carmelized flavor and color, as described on the package. There is no info on how it's processed. It supposedly contains minerals like magnesium.

I guess I am trying to remember what motivated me to order it, LOL. It supposedly has a lower glycemic load that regular sugar and it's got some nutrients in it. On the package it implies that it's an eco-friendly form of sugar because you can get a lot greater yield on less land than sugar cane.

I normally use honey for most of my sweetening needs (tea, smoothies and desserts, primarily). Although this is not raw, I might be inclined to use it for such things. It tastes a bit like brown sugar, so I am not sure if it would be too strong for teas.

Just thought I would share this experience. I know that there is a raw coconut sugar but I believe it's around $11 a pound. My bags came out to around $4 a lb. and it's organic, too. smiling smiley

Wow, it's acceptable for diabetics? It is supposedly substituted for white sugar 1:1. I found on the tongue that it seemed quite sweet and with a lovely caramel flavor...

Oh boy...Just skimmed this article [www.tropicaltraditions.com]

They say it's NOT sustainable. I remember reading something about palm oil in a similar vein.

Oh well...I want to taper off all external sugars anyhow, LOL. After these SIX bags...winking smiley

This is where they talk about 'sustainability' -

Thanks a lot for posting the sustainability issue with coconut sugar, banana who, because I wasn't aware of it and it's food for thought. I stopped eating all raw sweets except for fruits about a month ago - because I was eating the raw coconut crystals, nectar, and raw prepared foods with agave nectar in them. Also honey. I think honey was the worst - I was eating that for years, so now I'm looking forward to better health in future.

Reminds me of when I first learned peanut butter with palm fruit oil wasn't sustainable. Used to be a favorite food as a kid, and I was quite upset by this. Live & learn smiling smiley

Have used it for baking. You could make some healthier treats for family and friends if you're looking to use it up winking smiley.
I've given up on most sweetening, a bottle of maple syrup lasts for months even with 2 sugar loving kids around! Dates, dried fruit and raisins do it. Oh, and I'm sure gramma is sneaking those kids all kinds of stuff behind my back too, ha.
