Too many nuts?
Posted by: RawRookie ()

Hi Everyone,

I have a questions regarding portion sizes for nuts. I could probabaly eat a whole bag of nuts on my own. I have been buying raw cashews, almonds, pistaccios and brazillin nuts and they are such a tasty little treat.

Really to make sure I don't over do it - how much is too much!

Primarily my meanls have been fruits and veggies and I am using them as a snack.

Please let me know. Thank you so much!

I'd eat more almonds than other nuts because of the alkalizing nature of the almonds. If you eat too much nuts that are acidic, your body will try to use up other enzymes to get rid of the extra acids being produced. You can eat more almonds, too, because they have a lower fat content. Just my experience....

My experience is that they CAN be hard on the teeth...and more difficult to digest than..say....fresh fruit. However, if YOU think they are right for you...and you're not having a problem with weight control or digestive problems...then you should eat what you have determined to be right for you. You have my 100% support.

Almonds have an acid effect. The only nut I know of that doesn't is the hazelnut.

Just my personal experience:

I have stopped eating commercially shelled nuts now. I was eating too many nuts in the past, but I think that they were hindering my transition to raw as most nuts get cooked due to the high heat process involved in the shelling.
If I eat nuts I buy them in the shells, because having to shell them reduces my intake, and I refer the taste.

As others have stated, if you feel that what you are doing is working you then continue, if not change it a little and see how you feel then.

Yes it is tricky to decide how many to have.

David Wolfe in one of his books (I think 'Sunfood Success System') recommends no more than 0.33 lbs or 0.15 kg of nuts and / or seeds per day. He says something about them clogging up the digestive system, also being acidic ... so advises to eat them with leafy greens to balance that out. He makes other comments too.

In addition I have read in the past that it is best to buy nuts in season and in their shells. Shelled nuts are prone to mould type contamination which can feed stuff like candida in the gut etc.

In the U.K. (I'm not sure about where you are) this is a great time to buy reasonably fresh nuts in their shells.

I guess it is a matter of everything in moderation and a little of what you fancy does you good.

Not acording to what I have heard. My understanding is that Almonds are one of the only nuts which are alkalising. See [www.naturalhealthschool.com]

I reccomend eating NO MORE than a handful of nuts a day. (maximum of two handfuls).

I reccomend eating other water-rich fats instead of nuts, which are not as dense, such as avocado or young coconut.

Too much fat is not good.

Soak the almonds, rinse them 2 times a day and eat 'em with a pH that is over 7

Rob, to accept info from such sources is risky. What are
their references? Why do they not list their source material?

Sometimes they get it right but in this case they got it wrong.

Almonds have a lower acid effect than many other nuts.
But they are still net-acid. Hazelnut isn't.

QUESTION FOR arugula : If almonds are soaked for say....24hrs., do they then become alkaline? I'm puzzled about this, I've read in several sources that they are alkaline to start with. But, am I accurate in my understanding that soaking, rinsing, sprouting makes nuts and seeds less acidic?

Can anyone explain why there is so much variation between different acid-alkaline charts? This chart [www.acid-base.de] says that white sugar is neutral and brown sugar is alkaline, whereas this chart [www.naturalhealthschool.com] says that both brown and white sugar are acid forming, which is what I've read in many places.

Nuts are so yummie. I have a really big problem with them. I eat them a lot until I get sick. I know I'm not supposed to eat so much, but they are just sooooooo good. When I eat a lot of nuts I know I am not listening to my body, and I am more listening to my mind. mmmm yummie nuts. Brazil nuts are my favorite.
