What do you do about insect contamination ?

Date: March 10, 2014 11:47AM Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about the safety of eating insects. Since eating raw food I have become more aware of the amount of insects that are present in raw vegetables. In general I will wash and, if appropriate, peel vegetables but this wont ensure insect free food in many cases. For example with things like sugarsnap peas I now split them down the spine with my thumb nail and inspect the inside before eating as I have frequently found little (or big) grubs living inside. Broccoli is my current problem, it is naturally hydrophobic, running it under the tap is pointless the water just beads off it (it looks like it would make more effective waterproofing than Goretex). Inspecting it carefully though I can find lots of little aphid-like insects living inside. These insects would obviously still be present if you cooked the food, but they would be cooked which I suspect would kill any harmful germs. So does anyone have any thoughts on this, or indeed hard facts. Is it safe in general to eat insects that inhabit your vegetables raw, or is it dangerous, would it be less dangerous if they were cooked? Thanks, Usjes Re: What do you do about insect contamination ?

Or how do you guarantee that you are not eating them (I suspect this is impossible, but if someone can prove me wrong I would be interested to hear their reasoning). Usjes. Well insects are very healthy protein, organic, raw but vegan do not willingly eat them. But if they do eat them unknowingly they will be healthy. Re: What do you do about insect contamination ?
