Avocado Tip
Posted by: SueZ ()

It's recently become more cost effective in my area to buy large avocados instead of the medium sized ones so many times I have to store the other half for later. I came up with this way of doing it which is working out well.

I remove the pit from the half I want to store then place a sheet of Saran Wrap over the exposed surface. Then I replace the pit in the depression over the saran wrap and push it down until there is no air gap between the wrap and the avocado and then secure the ends of the wrap to enclose the avocado. I leave the pit there to hold down the wrap while it's in the fridge. This method has solved the oxidation problem of exposed avocado halves for me.

Eat one half in the morning
Eat the other half in the evening
And be happy.

Well however many you eat they taste better if they haven't oxidized. That's the problem I had to solve.

Here's another tip. Buy the really tiny avocados, they're cheaper per pound, and you can eat the whole thing at once.

Here's a price list showing the difference in price based on the size.

Avocado #2 HASS 70 Las Palmalitas Ranch STELLAR 2LYR BOX 49.25

I use the cheap little ones in the blender but prefer the larger ones unblended.

I read that the pit is very nutritious
You may be throwing away the best part that does not even spoil

Another problem for me with the tiny ones is the only store I can buy them at only sells them ripe to overripe. And that store is a $4 of gasoline drive away from me so even though they are only $.50 the large $1.99 ones end up being cheaper and less time consuming to get them.

Good point, that is why I am not into salad dressing with turmeric and the likes they are miles away.
Just eat my avocado plain and simple.

I've heard about the one leaving the pit inside to make it last longer. But never about the pit in/out. Thanks. I'll give a try next time.

I always try to buy when not ripe so they can last longer.
But sometimes they are not mature and do not even get soft to be eaten.
Catch 22. If already ripe they do not last. If not ripe they may never be good to eat.

I get my organic turmeric two pounds at a time from Amazon. I actually do most of my shopping online.

You're welcome. It was one of those ah ha/duh moments when I figured it out.

Yeah, I prefer to get them unripe, too, to get some control of the situation. I've gotten unripe duds, too. I guess it has a lot to do with what they've gone through temperature wise. I don't know what's the deal with Peapod but, for me, they are the one's that haven't gotten that worked out the most with the avocados. They seem to be getting a little better with it recently. I'm sure I haven't been the only one calling them up to get refunded for the duds.

I blended an avocado pit once and did not find it very appetizing. It tasted like I was eating the bark of a tree.

It might be worthwhile pulverizing the pits then dehydrating them then adding them back to smoothies, etc, as a powder.

I'm going to try this. I'll use sprouted avocado pits.

Well I couldn't resist playing with my food so I put a fresh out of the avocado pit in the VitaMix and pulverized it. To break it down further and to be able to get the pulp out better I blended it with a glass of water and ran it through the Welles hydraulic press to remove the water. I was very surprised at the gorgeous color of the liquid - like a transparent ripe persimmon color. It tasted very bitter though. The pulp ground up so fine that I'm just leaving it out to dry overnight right on the press cloth. No need to use the dehydrator.

I wish I remember what I blended it with, but the bitterness was overpowering everything else.

Apparently avocados aren't the only fruit that has more nutrition in the pits/seeds than in the fruit...

Maybe it is just the nutrition that matters. It is also the joy and excitement that come with eating.

I'm assuming you meant to type "maybe it ISN'T just the nutrition that matters. I will agree with that and certainly, were they able to speak, the avocado trees would be shouting that out to us as loudly as the fruitarians do. Lol.

Yes it is not the just the nutrition.
The avocados are probably not happy to be taken early from their mother while they are still feeding.

It's probably not a problem for those avocado pit babies since they can still sprout either way. They may even prefer to be taken early as it would be more jarring to fall down to the ground if they weighed more.

i think that plastic wrapped so closely to the flesh might invite some sort of leaching

maybe squirt lemon on the flesh as a preservative

Not if you fridge is kept cold. If I had a hot kitchen, like some people do in the summer, I'd store the whole roll of Saran wrap in the fridge. I also don't use my dishwasher because it has a plastic interior and prefer using parchment paper to the Teflon/teflex screen sheets of my dehydrator.

> maybe squirt lemon on the flesh as a preservative

Never worked for me.

Falling on the ground is a rite of passage for an avocado.
It means they are mature enough to become a new avocado tree.
And not falling far from the parent they will all remain in the same family of trees.

Not really such a good idea even for fruits.
