Question About Flax Seed Oil

Date: December 28, 2006 08:04PM How fast does it go bad, unopened but unrefrigerated.
Evidently, my dear mother did not realize Flax Seed Oil is supposed to be refrigerated even prior to opening and had a bottle stowed for perhaps a month or two in the cubbord (the one in use she put right in the fridge). So, should she toss the unopened one? Or perhaps she should save it for the summer and mix it in with the water for her gardening (silly question but while I'm here : can plants process oils into fatty acids for themselves or only water and minerals)? Anyway, main question is - is it good anymore you think? Thanks, Narz Re: Question About Flax Seed Oil

Date: December 28, 2006 10:33PM No, that's reference 245. The temp is 35C or 95F.
Ref 245 is: Oomah BD. 2003. Processing of flaxseed fiber, oil, protein, and lignan. In: Flaxseed in Human Nutrition, eds Thompson LU and Cunnane SC, 2nd ed, AOCS Press, Champaign, IL, pp. 363-386. Re: Question About Flax Seed Oil

Date: December 28, 2006 11:13PM I'm sorry, but I find it hard to beleive anything in an study which suggests that cooking flax doesn't damage it!
I heard that flax is not very stable, especially not good for cooking with. I buy flax oil from a small scale producer, they reccomend keeping it refrigerated even unopened. Rob -- Rob Hull - Funky Raw My blog: [www.rawrob.com] Re: Question About Flax Seed Oil

Date: December 28, 2006 11:42PM It probably does get degraded. But I think they are saying: not all *that* much, please still eat it.
Of course they have a vested interest. It would be necessary to read Oomah and see who funded him or her. You might try looking in the uspto.gov site for methods to enhance stability of flax oil for confirmation. They usually provide the data for controls (no treatment). But you have to be sure you aren't comparing apples with oranges, see what conditions are used in the determinations: temperature pressure amount of head space container type and color light and other types of radiation time flat plate or tall skinny bottle These can all make a big difference, individually or even more so in combinations. There is a Polish paper on thermal stability of flax but the pics aren't rendered in html and the full paper is no longer available free. Re: Question About Flax Seed Oil
