Date: June 02, 2015 01:32PM I have been making raw 'oatgurt' since shortly after I went raw:
![]() I haven't had much luck getting the oats to actually sprout first, but I do soak them overnight, blend them (with a splash of lemon juice), pour them in the yogurt jars and let them ferment for 10-12 hours in the yogurt maker. I don't use a culture (I tried and it made a soupy-nasty substance). I often then pour the finished product back out into a mixing bowl and add my own "flavorings" before redistributing into the jars for refrigeration (these are blackberry yogurts). Edited 2 time(s). Date: June 02, 2015 03:53PM Kiwibird, I was just thinking about oat groats! Are you using those or really raw flakes? I would imagine that the groats would sprout since they are in their unprocessed form unless they treat them somehow. Re: raw yogurt idea

Date: June 02, 2015 05:08PM I use oat groats and to be perfectly honest, it is probably more my own impatience rather than them not being able to sprout ![]() ![]() I actually did a lot of research into oats when first transitioning to raw since they are one of my favorite foods. The whole oats and oat groats are not heated or treated in any way. The steel cut and rolled oats (and quick oats) are heated and of course flattened or cut. They also don't genetically modify oats at all, so theres no risk of cross contamination with GMO crops ![]() Re: raw yogurt idea

Date: June 02, 2015 05:23PM What are whole oats compared to oat groats? From my understanding, there IS a version of rolled oats that are raw. What I like about this is that if I want to make a crust and don't want to make it 100% out of nuts, I could include this.

Date: June 02, 2015 05:53PM Whole oats have the hull, oat groats do not. Whole oats are not commonly sold in stores, as the hulls are inedible and hard to remove at home.
I wonder how they make the raw rolled oats? They steam oat groats to soften them enough to roll in regular rolled oats. I wonder if the raw ones are just soaked? Re: raw yogurt idea

Date: June 03, 2015 12:53AM Click on the link. Something about cold processing. I know that with olive oil they sometimes use rocks or something like that. It's an old technique that doesn't generate much heat. Re: raw yogurt idea

Do they actually make a 'rolled oat' out of oat groats? Or what do they do? As far as I was aware grain mills just ground up grains? Re: raw yogurt idea

------------------------------------------------------- Do they actually make a 'rolled > oat' out of oat groats? Yes! The two models I posted are adjustable so you can have your flakes be thick or thin. Groats are heated as part of the processing but that doesn't mean they will not sprout. Pleasant Hill cannot guarantee their grouts will sprout but some people who have tried have been successful with sprouting them. In any case the groats will have to be dehydrated enough after soaking or they will gum up the machine. Weighing your batches out before soaking and then again after dehydrating will take the guesswork out of the equation. You want them to weigh the same as they were when you bought them. Even if you don't want to flake your own grains it's a good idea to add these weighing steps to your routine. Re: raw yogurt idea
