Fruits, greens, and avocado diet?
Posted by: learningtofly ()

Hi,

Do you think a diet consisting of fruits and green-leaf vegetables with lots of avocado, but with no nuts, seeds, oils, condiments or supplements, is a healthy long-term diet?

Thanks!

Should work. I would put more emphasis on the green. The only issue I would have if it was me would be the b12 if you are not supplementing.

Yes - but 'a bit of avocado' rather than 'lots of avocado' would work better, I think. That's basically what my diet is - I find myself eating nuts/seeds/coconuts quite infrequently - avocado and durian feel so much better as fat sources!

Are you enjoying this way of eating?

Seems like such a diet would be imbalanced in Omega fatty acids.

Most f+v have an excellent omega6:3 ratio. Some greens have more omega3 than omega6. So it would work out pretty good if the diet included lots of f+v (several kg).

The only exception I've seen so far is watermelon.

I don't think a fruits, greens, and avocado only diet is sustainable for the long term. It does not contain enough minerals and vitamins. For example, selenium, zinc, and iodine may not be adequate.

The mid-western United States has very little iodine in the soil. It was known as "The Goiter Belt" in the early 20th century. A large number of people were deficient in iodine and grew large goiters on their necks. This is one of the reasons Iodine is added to processed salt.

Now that iodine is added to processed salt, goiters are not as big as a problem. Raw fooders may run into a problem because they stop eating processed salt that contains iodine.

The mineral selenium is essential for optimal health. There are not many raw foods that contain this. Brazil nuts are the best source of selenium. A fruits, greens, and avocado only diet will probably not supply enough selenium.

If the diet is a fruits, greens, Sea Vegetables, and avocado only diet then it will probably be safe.

Yes, sounds pretty good (with no too much avo). Very many folks have been eating like this for very many years and doing great.

Avacado has over ten times as much Omega=6 as three.

Total Omega-3 fatty acids : 165 mg
Total Omega-6 fatty acids : 2534 mg

I was thinking of the nonfatty fruits and greens, as avocadoes were mentioned separately in the post title. But I agree with the previous posters, it would work better with a little bit of avocado rather than a lot.

It sounds like a great diet, although I agree with the others who suggest less avo and more fruit (and greens if you care for them). Fruit is our natural food and we do best on lower fat diets.

All the best,
