Americans Want Healthful Foods, Not More Medicines
Posted by: Bryan ()
Date: February 11, 2007 03:45AM

In this article "Pills Or Papayas? Survey Finds Americans Want Healthful Foods, Not More Medicines", surveys are showing that 69% of Americans would prefer a dietary approach to healing diabetes over taking pills.

Quote

Neal Barnard, M.D., outlines a dietary approach to diabetes based on scientific research showing that a low-fat vegan diet can lower high blood sugar levels three times more effectively than oral medications.

Replace "low-fat vegan" with "low-fat raw vegan", and you are going to heal a lot more than your diabetes.

Healing diabetes with diet alone is old news to anyone who has been reading this forum for a while. However, it looks like the mainstream is ready for a dietary approach to healing diabetes.

well there is diabetes 1 which does "not heal" with diet and there is diabetes 2-which can be.my dr. told me to not eat anymore sugar and not gain anymore weight or she would have to write me out a perscription for diabetes medication.so there is one that can be cured and one that can not.hugs taylor

Hi Bryan thank you for this i totally believe in it...i have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes but since starting raw...i have given up my insulin letting my body heal itself..i have read so many peoples testomonies about getting off the insulin.....so i am hoping to be another one of those stories.....smiling smiley
Taylor...yeah that is what all dr. will say and endocrinologists as well..i always believed them as well but i then i read so many stories and i really TRULLY believe in raw.......my argument is this...so many diseases are cured through raw...the body heals itself...things dr. will say all the time that are not curable...such as cancer...but yet so many are cured of their body's sickness once they enter their raw journey...so why not diabetes??? i believe that raw can fix all things int he body...it heals itself with the proper environment....whose to say that raw can cure cancer but not reboot the pancreas......and believe me i am not trying to start an argument because you know i love ya!! but don't you believe so much in raw that healing is the key to treating all health challenges??/ so if tumors can be killed why not a pancrease???
love sachelle

It would sure be nice if we could find a way to target our youth and teach them about proper nutrition. I have three kids in high school, and every time I set foot in the building, I am astonished at the number of fat or obese teenagers walking around. (and a few teachers!) These are the diabetics of tomorrow. And why does it have to be like this, it never used to be this bad. I don't know if these young people simply do not understand basic nutrition, or whether it is something else.

The efforts that our school has made fall short. Even though they are providing healthy food options in the school, there is a fast food place across the street, so that is where the kids go if that's what they want. I've seen news stories about schools dishing out absolute trash for food, but when they do offer healthier options, they can't persuade the kids to eat it.

Not only are these poor kids doing their bodies the worst kind of damage, but in the next few years, many of them will become parents themselves, and what kind of nutritional values will they hand down to their own children? Times have changed so much, most families these days don't have a mom at home, spending the largest part of her day putting together the most nutritious meals she possibly can. Home is no longer the place kids learn this stuff (not always), so if we want it solved, I think we have to get the schools on board.

In the 1950's we went through a big phase of believing that we would develop a pill or medicine to solve every single problem. (my mom was in nursing school back in those days - you should hear some of her crazy ideas!) We have to get out of that mindset, and so many people haven't yet. It would be a wonderful thing if things were that simple, but sadly, they are not.

I have no idea what it would take to fix this, but I also can't believe this isn't fixable. Nobody is happy when they are obese and unhealthy. There must be a way to reach them and help them!

A few years ago I was on a committee of parents that wanted to have smoking banned on the school grounds (we still had a designated area at our high school). We had good reasons (I thought!) - these kids weren't legally old enough to even buy cigarettes for one thing. Smoking is banned for all adults in all public places here, why shouldn't these kids follow the same rules as everyone else. There's the obvious health reasons. But we were overruled - the school board said that they tried that, and when the kids were forced to walk around the neighborhood to smoke, the incidence of vandalism went up too high. CRAZY!

Of all the many things we want and expect our kids to learn in life, what is more imporant than this!

Yeah, I was about to post that I have a hard time believing 62% of Americans would rather change their diets than take medicine. If that were true, why are so many people sick from diet-related conditions and why is the pharmaceutical industry so profitable?

When I was diagnosed with high cholesterol about two years ago, my family members all said that it runs in our family and there's nothing to be done about but take the pills. This was usually said while shovelling high-cholesterol animal foods in their faces. I opted to change my diet and my cholesterol normalized quite quickly. The only thing that "runs in our family" is an overfondness of steak and eggs. My diet has also treated an extremely painful auto-immune disorder yet most people I associate with are astounded and amazed that I'm willing to follow such a "restrictive" diet just to avoid suffering life-disrupting and all-consuming pain. So I just don't buy this 62% of Americans want better foods and less medicines, as great as such an attitude would be.

I was just listening to an audio of Dr. Gabriel Cousens the other day (which I accessed through thebestdayever.com) and he was saying that he got a group of folks with diabetes all off insulin in less than a week -- including two who had type II diabetes. However he would not give the entire schpeel of how to do it because anyone with type II diabetes should not undertake that journey without a doctor such as himself there to make sure all is well at each stage.

I meet people all the time who say they have this ailment or that ailment. I ask them if they want to change their diets and basically fix a lot of their problems. Their answers are always the same, "no". But it's cool... I know 3 people who changed their lives. Me, my wife and my friend near Toronto.

That's goo news, Bryan. I hope Australians too. I once had a student in my office crying about him possibly having a cancer. But when I mentioned raw food to him, he said that he prefered his diet. I thought maybe he wasn't really serious about the cancer. If he was, wouldn't he want to try anything? Or perhaps, even in face of death, people are determined to continue their way. Are our cultural habits that strong? I don't know, because I always chose to defy them.

This is consistent with my opinion. There is much
that can be done with diet and exercise for type II.

But probably not very much for type I.

well- i guess i get scared of people with diabetes I.i want to be sure people have the info they need.I have had a girlfriend who needed her pancreas replaced.she had really bad diabetes and soooo thin.she killed herself.also i did not understand when we were housekeepers together and others had called in that day-so her and i doubled up and we kicked butt to get all the apts clean.she wanted to stop and go eat.i said(not knowing about diabetes I at the time)lets just finish up this next couple of apts and then we can take it easy after lunch.she ran out of the room to get supplies and ran into a wall and smashed on the ground and had to be taken in the ambulance.she was having a diabetic spell.she did not know where she was. she was constantly taking her blood sugar.she moved eventually-i always wrote her. then i had not heard from her in a while and she had killed herself.then as a caregiver...here is oregon -u can give medications and also shots and i have had always the niteshift...alone or the shift leader and trying to get people out of there diabetic lows.so scary to see them out of it and trying to get a protein snack down them.the Diabetes I can probably be better if u watch what u eat but i think u need to eat frequently and take your blood count .we had to record peoples blood sugar counts in the medical books and document everything.now diabetes 2 is adult onset diabetes.that is what i was told i was headed for.you can get rid of it.by diet and exercise.i just wanted to bring info that everyone needed so they would not harm themselfs.thanks so much...i love this site where we can talk about everything freely.thanks taylor

la_veronique,

Yes, it was Sergie Boutenko who healed his Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. If the pancreas is not too damaged, this is possible. I wonder if some babies simply develop insulin resistance in the womb, and don't necessarily have pancreas damage. If this were the case, healing Type 1 would be as easy as healing Type 2.

Its funny, healers like Dr Graham and Dr McDougall have healed many people of type 2 diabetes by having diabetics go on a low fat raw vegan or a low fat vegan diet. Its been in the literature since the early 1900's that reducing fat was key to healing diabetes. Yet, in an article that came out yesteday, Scientists Find New Genetic Explanation For Type 2 Diabetes. What a waste of time, money, and energy! In this article they state:
Quote

The research team comes from Imperial College London, McGill University, Canada, the Pasteur Institute of France and other institutions.
...
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors, of which very little is known.
...
Professor Philippe Froguel, of the Division of Medicine at Imperial College London, and one of the researchers on the project said, "If we can tell someone that their genetics mean they are pre-disposed towards type-2 diabetes, they will be much more motivated to change things such as their diet to reduce their chances of developing the disorder. We can also use what we know about the specific genetic mutations associated with type-2 diabetes to develop better treatments."

Don Bennett, the Disease Avoidance Specialist, wrote an excellent article called "Diabetes Caused by Misinformation".

Here is a quote from the article:
Quote

If you study the current diabetes info available on Medline, you’ll discover there are almost 600 new diabetes studies featuring hundreds of different theories and conclusions. A good example of misinterpretation (and I’m being kind here), is the study that shows that absence of breast-feeding is associated with the risk of type 1 diabetes, thus the search is on for the substance in breast milk that helps prevent diabetes. Is it lost on mainstream researchers that if a baby is not being fed breast milk, it is being fed something else, and that maybe it’s what is being fed in breast milks’ place that’s increasing the risk of diabetes, and not the other way around. Well, we probably have profit motive to thank for research going down the wrong path.

A few years ago I worked in a weight loss center. It wasn't raw, it just taught people to "balance out" there way of eating. We would have people coming into the center with so many problems and wanting us to help them. When it came time to change their diet, they weren't nearly as nice. I would often hear from clients that the meal plan created contained 'too many fruits and vegetables and not enough bread and meat". Keep in mind that breads and meats were included in this diet but the portions that they were given appearently weren't good enough. They would rather keep eating the way they were then lose the weight and improve their health. It wasn't even that strict! One lady said that she refused to try it unless our dieticians could find some way for her to have a bowl of icecream included in her mealplan everyday. She was so overweight that she was having a hard time breathing just sitting there!
Some people are still just waiting for that magic pill.

Typical. How sad. And frustrating. This ain't science. This is mere stupidity.

Scientists identify appetite control molecule
Scientists in Japan have identified a molecule responsible for making mammals feel full, a discovery that could lead to new ways to treat obesity in humans.
Scientists believe appetite is controlled in a region of the brain called the hypothalamus, and the group of researchers claims to be the first to pinpoint an agent that triggers an increase or decrease in appetite.
In an article published in the online version of the journal Nature, the scientists identified the molecule as nesfatin-1, which was produced naturally in the brain.
After injecting the molecule into the brains of rats, the scientists observed that the rodents began to eat less and lose weight.
The researchers also were able to induce the rats to eat more by blocking nesfatin-1.
"After we injected anti-nesfatin-1 antibody, these rats showed increased appetite and finally showed a progressive increase in body weight," Masatomo Mori, of the medicine and molecular science department at Gunma University Graduate School of Medicine, said.
Mr Mori said the finding could pave the way for treating obesity, which has become a major health problem in the developing world as well as in economically-advanced countries.
The World Health Organisation says there are at least 1 billion overweight adults across the world and 300 million of them are considered obese.
Obesity has been linked to chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and some forms of cancer.

It may be that Americans wanted more healthful foods, but it appears that it is not practiced by most Americans in this article called Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Too few eating fruits, vegetables.
