Date: April 13, 2007 06:34PM i've been curious lately as why certain seeds are 'edible' and others arn't. sure, one response would be that the seeds contain toxics, arsenic etc.. but seems kinda weird/arbitrary to me. I don't even know what a sesame is! does it have a fruit?. open sesame. I know cacao has a fruit. not that that is so edible.
why would pumpkin seeds be easier to digest than starchy pumpkin? someone replied on another thread that they have started eating the seeds in their fruits. has anyone else had experience with this? do you swallow seeds whole or chew them? Sometimes I think with the marketing of seeds its similar to things like maca. its just some dried thing from another country, like if we got peach seeds dried them and exported them to panama. what are your thoughts? All seeds contains a vitamin B 17. I usually eat all fruit seeds in addition other seeds and chew them liquid before swallowing them. The best seeds for B 17 are peaches, apricots and plums. In youtube you can find an interesting document about B 17. Search "World without Cancer" Cheers, MJH Re: the fruit seeds

Date: April 14, 2007 03:46PM Just because a food has a small amount of a toxic substance in it does not make it bad for us. Most green leaves have toxic alkaloids in them, but they have so much good stuff that the net effect is positive. That's why we have a digestive system and liver, to remove the toxic components of healthy foods.
I will continue to eat some papaya seeds and apple seeds, I've heard lots of good stuff about both. Apple seeds contain a very small amount of cyanide, but some say that is even good for preventing cancer. Here's a non-raw reference to apples and cyanide: "Luckily for those fond of their Granny Smiths, the body can detoxify cyanide in small doses, and the number of apple seeds it takes to pack a lethal punch is therefore huge..." from [www.snopes.com] Rob -- Rob Hull - Funky Raw My blog: [www.rawrob.com] Re: the fruit seeds

Date: April 14, 2007 03:58PM The plant fills its seeds with toxins and anti-digestive substances because it wants to survive, and have it's seeds grow into new trees; that, in fact, is the entire point of the plant's producing good tasting fruit in the first place; not to attract seed predators or pulp thieves. That is why it is safer to eat more durian or avocado; because they don't contain substances created by the plant in order to attack your organs when you eat them. Plants are more tolerant of leaf-eating than seed-eating, as well. Force the change you want to see in the world through direct, socialist democracy! [www.dreamingearth.net] Re: the fruit seeds

Date: April 14, 2007 05:12PM I always eat some papaya seeds when I cut open a papaya. Been doing that for decades. I'm not going to stop now. Guess I'll have to die of carpine poisoning.
My tombstone will probably read: Here lies Brian He wouldn't listen to science. of papaya seeds he did eat so to his Maker he went to meet. he wouldn't listen, he was out of line so he was taken out by carpine Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/14/2007 05:26PM by brian1cs. Re: the fruit seeds

Date: April 14, 2007 05:39PM I agree its silly to fret about small doses of toxin if the seed does indeed have 'benefits'. I think Dream Earth makes a clincher of a point though. I think durian/avacado would be the obvious choice for healthful fats, although I think what I was most curious about was not whether seeds are an ideal food but why certain seeds are 'healthier' than others.
