Moons on finger and toe nails

Date: April 23, 2007 04:45PM A year ago I read about moons on fingers and toe nails being a sign of mineral reserves. Since then I have been watching mine to see how they change and have noticed that they do keep changing. I only have them on my thumbs and big toes (Hhmm!) and am trying to see if I can get them on all of my nails. I have a vague memory of having them on all of my finger nails when younger ... (although I am not sure).
My best raw food buddy (Jamaican origin) has none at all and he is wondering whether Afro-Carribeans get them or not ??? ... since he cannot ever remember having any even as a child. (I'm guessing yes ... but I really don't know). Does anyone on the forum know???. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/23/2007 04:46PM by vegan john. Re: Moons on finger and toe nails

Date: April 23, 2007 11:40PM Hmmm....very interesting. I dunno. I do remember having them when I was a kid and I think about that a lot. I was a pretty healthy kid so I feel like my best reference to health is remembering things like that. I have been addicted to figs for about three months and my nails are super strong now. Date: April 24, 2007 11:35AM I used to have those a lot, since becoming vegan I had them less. Someone told me years ago that it was a calcium issue, then someone else said it was a zinc issue.
I don't know what causes it but when I am eating 100% Raw I don't seem to get them, perhaps it has something to do with the acidity (ph level) of your body. Date: April 24, 2007 12:31PM I remember as a kid being told that those were signs of your nails growing....those white blemishes/clouds on your nails are supposed to be from stress and lack of zinc. Re: Moons on finger and toe nails

Date: April 24, 2007 03:58PM Many thanks for all of your comments. Yes it is a very interesting.
I also have a friend who is eating mainly cooked vegetarian (but she does have some salads and fruit too). She is in her early 30's and has very large ones on all her fingers (not sure about her toes) even though she also has plenty of the white flecks too (which ... yes ... are considered to be a zinc deficiency. Although some people also say possibly calcium deficiency can be involved with the white flecks). I'm glad and thankful that some of you explained how the moons look ... yes they are the white crescent shapes at the base of the nail where the cuticle is (as opposed to any flecks, clouds, specks etc elsewhere on the nails that relate to a possible zinc deficiency). During the past year that I have been observing mine, I have noticed that they grow when I eat cooked grains such as organic oat groats or organic jumbo oats gently cooked into porridge. I am not completely raw, so I do have some quinoa, millet etc at times too. On the one hand, I read about 'Grain Damage' to our bodies by consuming grains which in theory makes a lot of sense to me ... and then on the other hand when I have grain e.g. oats ... well then my moons really get larger (Hhmm!). My moons were the best when I was a child / teenager (and possibly also in my twenties) when I ate mainly cooked (and wasn't veggie or vegan). Any thoughts as I eat so many dark leafy greens, fruits etc etc? Re: Moons on finger and toe nails

Date: April 24, 2007 04:45PM Hmm, I have them on all nails and always had except for the littlest finger and the littlest toe. I only know that when you have white spots randomly on the nails it is sign that might need attention. Re: Moons on finger and toe nails

Date: April 24, 2007 06:22PM I used to have moons on all of my fingers and toes except my baby toes (too tiny). Today, after 2.5 years of modified raw (6 mos of which were 100% raw vegan), I only have moons on my thumbs and big toes. I heard that when one eats raw and has enough minerals in the body, the moons go away. The person that told me this also experienced his moons fading in or out depending on the level of raw. He concluded that one is healthiest if the moons aren't there. I'm not sure if the moons on his thumbs and big toes went away or not.

Herbal Repair Kits for Most Common Problems & illnesses Master Formulas Alternatives Ten Commandments Of Health Water Filtration and Purification Systems Water & What Should Be In it Let Your Fingers Be Your Physician! © By Lena Sanchez Well, your fingers can't really be your physician but could your fingernails be the diagnostician? Some fingernail changes can be indicative of problems within your body! Here are but a few indications that may save your life and/or health… Brittle soft and shiny nails without a moon at the base is indicative of an overactive thyroid. Brittle nails alone can be indicative of a possible Iron deficiency, thyroid problems or impaired kidney' function and/or circulatory problems. A Vitamin B12 deficiency or anemia can be detected by dark nails and/or thin, flat spoon-shaped nails. Also can be detected when nails turn gray or dark when the hands are placed in chemicals such as household cleaning products or bleach. Then there is the downward-curved nail ends that may let you know there is a liver, heart or respiratory problem. If you detect bumps or lumps (called beading) that just appear on the nail surface, you may have impending or full blown rheumatoid arthritis. Ridges can indicate poor nutrient absorption, and/or Iron deficiency. Those ridges could mean there is a kidney problem also indicate a tendency to develop arthritis if they are vertical ridges. Then the ridges running horizontal can result from stress, either/or psychological or physical as in the case of disease or infections. Nails that chip, peel, crack or break easily show a General overall nutritional deficiency and insufficient hydrochloric acid and protein. This is seen in people who use antacids on an ongoing basis or eat foods low in nutrients. This calls for total minerals and Vitamins at triple the RDA's. Pitting red-brownish spots with frayed split ends are indicative of psoriasis. Also requires Vitamin C, folic acid and protein needs. Black splinterlike bits under the nails can be a sign of 1. A serious heart infection called endocarditis 2. and/or other heart disease. 3.possible bleeding disorder. Very thick nails can be indicative that the vascular system is weakening and the blood is not circulating throughout the body as it should. Could also bee the sign of thyroid disease. Thinning nails could signal an itchy skin disorder Called lichen planus and/or oral reticular lichen planus. Yellow nails or upward nail tip growth can indicate Internal disorder long before the symptoms appear. Some of the internal problems could be the lymphatic system, respiratory disorders, diabetes and/or liver dysfunction. White lines in the nail could show possible heart disease, high fever or arsenic poisoning. If the white moon area of the nail turns red It may be indicative of heart problems. If it Turns blue it could indicate heavy metal Poisoning (such as silver overload) or lung problems. Two white horizontal bands that does not move as the nail grows are a sign of hypoalbuminemia, a protein deficiency in the blood! Deep blue nail beds indicate a pulmonary obstructive disorder such as asthma or Emphysema. Unusually wide, square nails can suggest a hormonal disorder! Red skin around the cuticles of the nail can be Indicative of poor metabolism of essential fatty Acids or of a connective tissue disorder, such as Lupus… Take these serious and maybe head off something serious! But just because you may not have any of these signs does not necessarily mean you do not have a problem or impending problem. Mia Re: Moons on finger and toe nails

Date: April 25, 2007 08:37AM hmm all this talk about the nails....everyone has a small moon on their nail whether you can see it or not it is behind the cuticle if it was pushed back or so i learned in beauty school..... and if you look at your nails and push the cuticle you will see a small amount of the white moon...so i don't know haha...but thanks mia for the nail thing that is cool i have something similar we learned in beauty school so it is interesting to se how much is believed in the holistic world as well

Date: April 25, 2007 03:18PM Thanks for all of the interesting comments. Also a special thank you to Mia for the 'Let Your fingers be your physician!' info. I found that really fascinating ... so a very big thank you.
Earth Angel, the stuff you learned about the nails in beauty school ... do you have any extra info re reading the condition of the nails that wasn't in Lena Sanchez's link? (I find it really fascinating). I think (??) I also read last year in some of the raw books etc about a diet high in raw fruits washing out the minerals from the body(??). (If I have remembered it properly. It was something along those lines. Perhaps one of you who has also read about this too, can help me out here). I love fruit and eat lots of it ... so I hope that is not the case. Having said that ... last year I was chatting to someone who had wonderfully large moons on all the fingers and thumbs. When we discussed the moons, he said he had been eating a lot of ripe plums from his own plum tree. So that sort of possibly contradicts that theory. He also didn't eat a raw diet either. Date: April 25, 2007 04:34PM I think as we get older, many of us have let our cuticles grow over or they thicken and cover the half moons. You can push them back everyday, or as I did not long ago I cut the thicken cuticle back and then use coconut oil to soften them and it helps a lot.
Maybe it's the accumulation of more dead skin cells that thicken our cuticles? And I always thought that the white flags in our fingernails came from when we bumped or injured that soft tissue under the nail..leaving the white mark. Love, Prism Re: Moons on finger and toe nails

My cuticles are not any thicker than when I was a child. In fact, I hardly have any visible cuticles at all. Therese Re: Moons on finger and toe nails

Date: April 25, 2007 10:09PM In Survival Into the 21st Century by Viktoras Kulvinskas he says strong moons on every finger indicates strong circulation and high vitality. No moons indicates very poor circulation and lots of mucus, very unhealthy. I found this to be true with me. After a good fast my moons will be back very strong. When they're weak I'm not doing too well. Re: Moons on finger and toe nails
