What to use for deodorant?
Posted by: sndnance ()

Hi, I was just wondering what any of you use for deodorant. I sweat A LOT and can't seem to find anything that helps. I don't want to walk around stinking. LOL. I've used that crystal stuff and it helped at first to where I had no odor when I would sweat but now it's went back to me being stinky. I find myself washing my clothes a lot more than when I used regular deodorant. Please Help.

Also, what do you use for laundry detergent?

I have used the crystal for years. It kills the bacteria that cause oder. I love it. Raw makes deoderant less neccessary but I still need it.

I haven't used deodorant for years. Taking a shower or bath everyday keeps me fresh smelling. Some multi vitamins used to make me smell, that I no longer use.

I think the crystal contains aluminum, so I avoid it. I looked at the ingredients once, and it was alumini-something-or-other, and that made me suspicious that it was just as harmful as regular deoderant. Anybody know?

I find now I hardly ever need any, wheras before I couldnt go any period of time without it.

Lush do a range of solid deodarants if you feel you need something.

Or theres the crystal

Personally prefer not to, use essential oils if I feel the need to smell of something!!

i haven't tried to go without DO but maybe after i've been raw a month or more, i'll try to be DO and BO free.. hee hee....

I also find that I don't need it anymore. I think the sweat was mostly toxins leaving my body.
I have heard that lemon juice, or baking soda can help under the arms. I wouldn't recommend any store bought kinds, however this database may help: [www.cosmeticsdatabase.com]

It lists by order of concern, according to what ingredients may be harmful. The crystal deodorant is the safest on their list... if you click on it you get more details.

P.S. I used to sweat a lot too... A LOT... but I have since equated it to the soda I was drinking. I used to drink a lot of diet soda... and also being probably full of toxins... makes a big difference in the amount of sweat you experience. Even though I still sweat sometimes a little, naturally, I know that at least I don't have to worry about it as much. And it's not smelly =)...So I would suggest looking into what might be causing it... something you eat or drink, or put on your skin even?
Besides that what I used to use for perspiration worked VERY well because it closes off your sweat glands completely. It's called CERTAIN DRY, you can buy it at normal stores. BUT it contains aluminum, and I gave it up because I figured that blocking the sweat off completely was not a healthy way to go about it. NOW I only keep it around, *just in case* I have the rare occasion of going in front of an audience or something (when I will be very nervous). Otherwise as I said above, I use nothing =)

Yet one more unexpected advantage of a simple live/raw diet. Because of concern re aluminum I too switched to HFS deodorants, then to powder and after a while, although timid about it, decided to experiment going without, and it has worked for the most part so far. Exceptions are when I've eaten certain strong smelling foods, especially scallion aka green onions, onions, etc and then it changes my chemistry enough to have an odor--not too strong, but enough for me to be aware of it.

My guess is that eating non-commercial foods with minimum or or no processing, the food digests faster, doesn't have time to sit around and ferment nor leave residue that the body doesn't know what to do with it. My other guess is that the chlorophyll in vegetables possible helps serve as a natural internal deodorizer and helps maintain a better balanced chemistry.

Wishing you vibrant health

Sweating is a normal body process...that is what the hair is there for (or was for...for those of us who shave)...otherwise...a dab of a good quality "Essential OIL" or even better flower scented water should take care of any odor you have...flower scented waters are more gentle and should not irritate your skin...oils are gentle also but the other day I felt like trying on cinnamon oil and my wrist felt like it was on fire...it was WAY too strong for my skin...so be careful...Diana

-I stopped using chemicals on my body many, many years ago...and have not regretted it. During detox / transitional phases? You COULD use lemon juice & water.....to discourage odor and bacteria......but as to the actual sweating? Why would you want to stop that? Ha! ha! The body is sweating to help re-establish a proper fluid balance and provide for good elimination. I WOULD NOT try to stop that process....but rather find the source of why you sweat excessively. Just my opinion.

I am an elementary school teacher in an un-air-conditioned classroom, and it gets very hot in there. I walk around all day and most days it reaches 90+ degrees in my room. I have found that a paste of baking soda and water works perfectly for me.I just rub it under my arms, and it works like a charm.

Some days if I forget to rub that on, I do get a 'musk' like scent (not BO), which is just a normal. If I do want to avoid that, though, I stick with the baking soda.

Love, Tammy

I have used Lavilin for years. No aluminum. Here are the ingredients:

Zinv Oxide, Petroleum Jelly, Talc, Potato Starch, Calendula Oil, Arnica Oil, Vitamin E, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Citric Acid, Natural Fragrance

It works well. I use it every week or two.

I use the crystal deoderant. There is a brand of it with 'potassium alum' which I avoid and one with just mineral salts and water.

I use 100% pure soap only for laundry. (For everything really) After reading on the difference between detergents and real soap, I was disgusted that the big manufacturerors took away our good soap and replaced it all with detergents, some of which are still labled as 'soap'. (most bar soaps, for instance are detergents)

Detergents make our skin and mucous membranes and lungs 40% more permeable to everything. Soap does not do this, as it does not strip the protective layers off of our body. There is a layer of detergent on everything in the home, and detergent dust in the air, and it does not rinse clean off dishes, so its going into our bodies in massive amounts. Yes, even those earth friendly, biadegrable detergents from health food stores... same thing.

I use mostly calben soap products which I but online, and dr bronners bar soap for bathing. Even the infant 'soaps', ivory snow and bathing products are detergents now.

My sense of smell increased dramitically since I stopped using detergents and my life long skin problems vanished. My son and I both had eczema, which vanished after switching to real soap and never came back. I had suffered for 30 years with it and not one dermatologist knew about this soap vs detergent thing.

Yes, vegcase, the site has been invaluable to me; I was using a '5' level sunscreen until I looked at that site yesterday and was able to switch to a product with the lowest rating I could find instead (I just happened to be out at that second.) I'm also going to phase out all of the 'avalon organics' products I had as a result of looking them up there. I don't need a deodorant that causes reproductive mutation...

Burts Bees (I think) makes a great one for men, but women use it too. I make it at home and give it to anyone who will try it!
Of course when totally raw, nothing is needed, but lots of ppl need or want a deodorant. This recipe works better than anything I know:

half cup water
half cup ethanol
few drops real essence of lavandin
few drops real essence of lemon
few drops real essence of sage

Essential oils (botanically-derived, not factory-derived), are excellent cleaners and fresheners. The alcohol makes it dry faster, but is optional.
Put it in a small spray bottle and spritz a little under the arms. Works for hours.
