Notice the anti spin, "stone age diet"

Man claims new sleepless record

How man pushed sleepless limits
A Cornish man says he has broken the world record for sleep deprivation by staying awake for 11 days and nights.
Tony Wright, 42, from Penzance, was trying to beat the Guinness world record of 264 sleepless hours set by Randy Gardner in the US in 1964.

He fought off tiredness by drinking tea, playing pool and keeping a diary.

The Guinness Book of Records has since withdrawn its backing of a sleep deprivation class because of the associated health risks.

Hardest part

Weary Mr Wright told BBC News: "I feel pretty good, It's been a bit of a slog, but I got there."

He said that his 'Stone Age' diet of raw food helped parts of his brain to stay awake and remain functional for long periods.

He said: "It makes it much easier to switch from one side of the brain which is really tired, to the other.

"But both are pretty tired at the moment."

During the record attempt, Mr Wright noticed his speech becoming incomprehensible at times and colours appearing very bright.

A webcam and CCTV cameras monitored him 24-hours a day.

The attempt was part of Mr Wright's research into the body's relationship to sleep.

He argues that parts of the human brain require a different amount of sleep and it is possible to stay awake and remain functional for long periods.

He said the hardest part was staying in one place - Penzance's Studio Bar - in order to prove that he was not popping out for a sleep.

He set out to keep a full video record of the entire 11 days as proof he stayed awake.

People who have had babies probably wonder why anyone would intentionally deprive themselves of sleep - like me, for instance.

My guess is that he is sleeping right now!

I'm hoping he will post a report of his experience on the website soon... [www.sleeplessinpenzance.co.uk]

Even the Guiness people took sleep deprevation off their records because they realized it was dangerous to health.

This man may just have undone so much of the good he did eating a good diet.

Sleep dep is unhealthy. I don't see any good point in this kind of thing.

If you are eating a SAD diet then sleep dep is not good, but Tony has proved that if you eat a raw diet, things are very differernt. I watched him beat someone at pool after 9 days of being awake. SAD eaters couldn't do that.

You don't have to see the point, he's doing research. Read more about it before dismissing it.

Its not something to do on a frequent basis, but as an extreme form of endurance to get a world record it is ok if he wants to do it and has fully researched the risks. Since not much research has been done into extreme sleep deprivation (which dosent include deprivation as a form of torture) then there cannot be much evidence as to whether his diet helped him or not in reaching this specific goal. Just as the papers jump the post with their 'stone age' comments, it wouldn't be wise to jump it to promote the diet either.

Oh, how weird.

Somebody (maybe it was him) posted a link to his book on usenet (which at the time was a free download at his site chapter by chapter) several years ago.

I thought it was very interesting and thorough!

He's very sharp and good-looking to boot. I am glad to see that he is raw.

his site is here:
