A look into the future

What do you think will happen with raw foods and the movement in the future?

I have a fear sometimes that the trend will be GM foods, more "enhanced" fruits and vegetables will come and less organic produce will be available. The worldwide population increases all the time, even exponentially. Will there be less room for farming on the planet? Will the prices on organic produce radically go up? Maybe the quality on these foods will inevitably go down more and more. And then nobody, not even the healthy raw fooder will be able to thrive on a non-supplement diet. And then the supplements will cause problems themselves.

But what if...

the demand on organic produce increases radically as information spreads and GM foods will only be a habit in developing countries were people are starving. (I saw a documentary were they said that GM create more food per area). And scientists are already working on less dangerous methods to keep weed and bugs off our plants. Maybe it's a political question (duh smiling smiley) and it's decided that organic fruits and veggies will be planted wherever possible. And the produce will be available, almost free, for everyone and everywhere. That could be sustainable as long as the worldwide population is not reaching something like 50 billion, yes?

:-D That would be nice for a change. However, the profit motive tends to get in the way.

Grow your own food. Plant fruit trees wherever you can. That's the only way to guarantee readily available organic food...

Rob is right. The future is up to us. If we fruit lovers aren't planting and growing organic trees, there's no reason to expect that anyone else will be doing it.

Nearly all farmers - including organic - are under financial pressure unless they have other means of income. There's usually not a great "profit" motive for making a huge investment in land and planting fruit trees, then waiting years for them to bring in any money, plus finding affordable workers and pickers, insurance costs, etc.

We can't expect our government to sponsor programs for planting fruit trees on land that could be more profitably used for "development". Why would they do that anyway, when most people prefer junk food to fruit?

It's totally up to us to do it for LOVE, not money.
