Digestion Question
Posted by: Peisinoe ()

I know that it can take up to 3 days for the body to digest meat, on medicine packages of medicines that react with milk, it requires that 4 hours of digestion take place after milk consuption before one should take the pills, but through all my travels I have never known how long it takes for the good stuff to get digested...

So my question today is;

How long does it take for the body to digest:

fruit
leafy greens
vegetables (non starchy)
vegetables (starchy)

and the combination of fruits and leafy greens?

Anyone who knows this, thank you for posting!! I am gonna search google a bit and maybe answer my own question, and I will post any results I find for those interested.

From what I found so far online from non-medical sources, just random surfing:

fruit juice = 15 minutes
fruits = up to 30 minutes, average is 20 minutes
Most veggies that are raw leave the stomach "quickly" as well, with the exception of spinach, but the more one eats spinach, the better the digestive tract becomes at digesting it. smiling smiley

I also came across this:
"We learned in the previous chapter that such things as coffee, tea, bitters, etc., cause an early emptying of the stomach without, in any way, shortening their digestion time. In other words, foods may be sent out of the stomach before gastric digestion is complete."

I always understood that watermelon takes less than half an hour to leave the stomach. On the above list it says 2 3/4 hours. Unless they mean total digestion time, like from eating it to elimination? But that would be extremely fast and from my own experience watermelon takes from 6 to 12 hours to eliminate.

I am confused smiling smiley

Francis,
I found this chart. It makes a bit more sense I think.
