Date: July 27, 2007 05:55AM Cocoa powder is made from the same stuff as cacao powder, except the cocoa powder is roasted and the cacao powder is supposedly raw. Re: cocoa or cacoa

Date: July 27, 2007 06:46AM "Cacao" is a marketing term David Wolfe came up with in order to differentiate his raw chocolate from the processed. It was/is actually a brilliant marketing strategy that has been very successful for him and many others who followed. "Cacao" is just raw, unprocessed (though fermented) cocoa/chocolate.
Major companies in the chocolate industry now use the very same term after recognizing its marketing value (e.g. Hershey's "Cacao Reserve" chocolate bar). IMO raw chocolate is not truly healthy but is an OK transitional food away from cooked & processed chocolate. Re: cocoa or cacoa

Date: July 27, 2007 02:31PM Cacao is the name of the bean in Spanish, and it's used to make chocolate, both cooked and raw. If you're ever hiking in the tropics and come upon this plant with it's heavy, football-shaped red and green fruits, pull one off, split it open (prefereably with a machete, but a sharp rock might work) and suck on the white slime-covered seeds. It's sour, slightly sweet if it's ripe, and has a slight chocolate aftertaste. Then, when you've pretty well sucked off the outer membrane, you can chew on the bitter dark brown middle.
I live in the Dominican Republic, and the locals usually don't eat it because they say it'll give you "gripe", or a cold if you ingest too much. Sometimes their folksy wisdome is right, and sometimes it's just a bit cracked. You've gotta love it all the same. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
