Date: August 17, 2007 10:26PM my grocery had a durian falling apart today
and i asked the guy for a tiny sample as he was wrapping it up, which he kindly obliged. it was my first durian experience and i have to say i got quite a rush from just the small bite. it had medium garlic taste to it though and i wonder if that is normal for durian or perhaps it was on the knife or cutting board. Date: August 17, 2007 11:23PM Durian has sulphur in it as do onions and garlic, which is why it can taste a little like the latter.
Durian also increases blood pressure so it makes sense if you felt a rush from it -- literally! Cheers. Re: is durian supposed to taste like garlic?

Date: August 18, 2007 12:26AM Durian definitely has an aftertaste of garlic/onions. When I last had some, I brushed my teeth for hours and I still had the taste in my mouth. Apparently if you pour water into the shell and rinse your mouth with that afterwards it takes away the odor. Re: is durian supposed to taste like garlic?

Date: August 18, 2007 12:31AM I tried a durian a couple of years ago. I just had a few bites of some frozen durian. I know this sounds crazy, but the aftertaste or aftersmell stayed in the background for about a year and a half. I have no idea how or why that happened. But I have absolutely NO desire to ever try it again! Re: is durian supposed to taste like garlic?

Date: August 18, 2007 01:23PM well if you are in the US, the durians we get are largely frozen. any experience i've had it always tastes incredibly sweet (and of course fatty/creamy) and has NO repulsive oder (off the tree might be different). Any time i've fed it to others who eat a typical diet (and raw food folks that do no cleansing) find it repulsive (like onions) and say it smells awful. Re: is durian supposed to taste like garlic?
