Date: September 03, 2007 04:54PM I know how to crack open a mature, brown coconut, but getting the flesh out is a bear.
Is there some type of tool that can pull or strip out the flesh easily? - Smile Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/03/2007 05:02PM by smilebig. Re: mature coconut

Date: September 03, 2007 05:19PM I heat mine in the over at 200 degrees (you can find details on the Internet) for abut 15 to 20 minutes, just enough to shrink the meat away from the shell..it isn't noticable but it sure comes out easy. Make sure you have drained out all the milk from inside the coconut first..or it may explode.

Shows how to get it off with a grapefruit knife. I haven't tried it since I don't have a grapefruit knife. I lay a smallish coconut peice white side up and take a steak knife and tap the sharp side into the flesh with a hammer and twist. If that doesn't work I tap it in again but this time at 90 degrees to the first cut. Re: mature coconut

welcome to my life! where i live i can't get anything but mature coconuts. after draining the water/whacking it open, i pry the hard white flesh from the shell with the butter knife. then there's usually some woody brown peel left on the outside layer of the flesh so i peel it off with a carrot peeler. presto. Thank you for the video link. This video proved to be very helpful to me. I do have a flexible knife to get underneath the coconut flesh and look forward to trying out this technique. - smile Re: mature coconut

Date: September 05, 2007 11:33AM Yes. The above suggestions are great.
-If you crack your coconut into 4-6 parts (using a hammer....and cracking in an old metal bowl will allow you to save the coconut water first)......about 1/2 the size of a dvd.......then you can just use the tip of a sturdy butter knife.....and work it up under the white flesh....and down between the shell....then TWIST..............and it will lift free......do that at several points......at the sides of each piece.....and the white flesh will pop free. Remember that the pieces need to be no more than about 3-4 inches square (or triangular!). You can do a whole coconut in about 5 minutes or so. -Just my experience. -David Z.
