Is it safe to eat raw yucca root that I dig up from my backyard?

Without checking, I understand that it's toxic (with cyanide), if raw.

I think was used in Brazil to poison invaders who were unfamiliar with it.

Well, I did not know what yucca is and how it tastes, so I bought it twice and ate it raw (small portions).

I had no problems at any kind.
Maybe when I'll have some time, I'll read more about yucca.

Pls. excuse my English - foreigner.

traditionally it is fermented. i have read that it's high in natural flouride which is why people who eat it have such lovely teeth. i don't know about raw though, it's one of those tricky plants. take care.

There is info on various types of Yucca here [www.pfaf.org]

I don't know which specific plant the common one is, but many of the varieties say this in the Known Hazards section:

"The roots contain saponins. Whilst saponins are quite toxic to people, they are poorly absorbed by the body and so tend to pass straight through. They are also destroyed by prolonged heat, such as slow baking in an oven. Saponins are found in many common foods such as beans."
