Date: September 22, 2007 03:50AM traditionally it is fermented. i have read that it's high in natural flouride which is why people who eat it have such lovely teeth. i don't know about raw though, it's one of those tricky plants. take care. Re: yucca

I don't know which specific plant the common one is, but many of the varieties say this in the Known Hazards section: "The roots contain saponins. Whilst saponins are quite toxic to people, they are poorly absorbed by the body and so tend to pass straight through. They are also destroyed by prolonged heat, such as slow baking in an oven.
