Try Adding These Superfoods To Your Thanksgiving Dinner This Year

Here are some superfoods that are in season during the fall that were taken from an article called "Try Adding These Superfoods To Your Thanksgiving Dinner This Year" (I clipped out the non-raw vegan stuff):

Tired of spinach, bored with broccoli? Experts say there's a new generation of superfoods that promise to do double or triple-duty when it comes to preventing illness.

At the top of the list kiwi. "In a recent study, kiwi was found to be one of the most nutritionally dense fruits out of 27 fruits," says Stephanie Dean, R.D., dietitian with Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

Kiwis are full of antioxidants, vitamin E and lutein. They ward off vision problems, blood clots, and even lower cholesterol.

Next on the list is a traditional Thanksgiving favorite cranberries.

"The crimson color of cranberries signal that they are full of flavonoids," explains Dean.

Flavonoids high in antioxidants help prevent everything from infections to strokes and cancer.

"Broccoli sprouts have been shown to actually contain 20 percent more anti-cancer agents than regular broccoli," says Dean.

Broccoli sprouts are sold by the package and can be thrown on top of salads or can be a great addition to sandwiches.

Speaking of cranberries...I have an excellent cranberry recipe, perfect for the holidays... even the SAD eaters loved it:

Raw Holiday Cranberry Sauce *
2 cups fresh Cranberries (ground with an S blade in a food processor)
1 organic Orange (wash well - then finely grate skin and chop flesh very fine)
2 ripe Pears (peeled and chopped fine)
1 sweet Apple (peeled and chopped fine)
½ cup Walnuts or Pecans (chopped into small pieces)
4 Celery ribs (chopped fine)
½ cup organic Raisins
½ teaspoon ground Cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground Ginger
¼ teaspoon ground Allspice
½ cup raw, unfiltered Honey

Grind berries, grate orange skin, chop fruit, mince nuts, and chop celery. Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Cover and place in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Can be served on a bed of leaf lettuce.Sooo good!

I hope its okay to post this recipe in this forum.

Awesome Bryan! I've been enjoying a kiwi (skin & all) in my morning smoothie ever since going raw and I eat broccoli every day for lunch in my salad. Nice to see that I have two of the three bases covered. Will pick up some cranberries on my next trip to the store.

Great post and timely at that.

David

I make a similar (though simpler) cranberry sauce. Its just cranberries, an apple, an orange, and some dates to sweeten sort of chopped up in a food processor. You want it to be very coarse, not a smooth puree.

Also, I like making cranberry smoothies: just bananas and cranberries. If you have a powerful enough blender, you don't need to add any liquid. But if have a low power blender, you might add enough water to allow the blending to occur.

Cranberries are very strong, so it doesn't take that many to get the flavor.
