"You only fail when you fail to start again" that's totally inspiring!

I could have given that whole pep talk since I'm not someone who who could just "flip the switch" and go raw and stay raw. (Although, I did flip the switch when I went vegan). I'm always baffled as to why I was able to go vegan overnight and now struggle so much with raw. I think that it was bacause the animal foods just grossed me out, but the cooked vegan foods don't have that gross factor.

I think that the way to not stress over slip-ups, is to be high-raw forever, and if you feel like 100% then do 100% but always admit to yourself that you are only high-raw, then there is no failure.

Thanks F1!

Hi Fruitarian One,

That was reassuring for me. I must agree with you that going raw is bigger than me.

Thanks much, Kit

Excellent message F!, the food is not the problem with me, but everything else!

Like, toothpaste, deoderant, shampoo & conditioner, soaps, lotions, cleaning supplies, detergent, etc. I get depressed and feel like a failure when I can't find a substitute for these!

A couple things I do... use vinegar for cleaning everything; combo of 1 part lemon juice/2 parts olive oil to polish wood furniture/floors; I use toothsoap for toothpaste; coconut oil for body lotion moisturizer; detergents mixture of borax and vinegar (thinking of trying this too for dishwashing detergent)..

I'll get back if I think of more.

Cheers,

Oops, I forgot to mention cheese, the only animal product that has any pull on me. If I eat a little bit when I'm company at someones house, I'll go home and start raiding the fridge for the cookedfooder's cheese stores (I have to live with the stuff in the house and I can usually ignore it) I would really love to get over my cheese cravings, has anyone done that? I remember someone saying one way to get over a craving is to eat so much that you get sick of it.

Just a passing thought: Cheese is a representation of the care, love and support given from cow to calf. Learn to identify the TRUE emotional need for that....and learn to provide it to yourself daily....and you will go beyond cheese! LOL.

-Remember that one does not 'beat' cravings - but must have something more exciting and joyful to supercede it with. Just my opinions.

-Power & Strength to you.

Coco... yes, I would love to hear about your natural alternatives and your recipes. Please post!!!!

Lillianswan... Regarding the cheese cravings; I eat lots of cashews and that helps with me... you might just be craving the fat or that full feeling (I love cheese too; but don't indulge anymore). Anyhoo, I find that eating cashews does the trick.

ok, the raw house thread is coming up.

i read somewhere once that something in cheese is the same as something in breastmilk, the ultimate comfort food. there isn't really an replacement for cheese but i have had some success making things cheezy with nutritional yeast. not raw but a good transition food i think. it's good sprinkled on popcorn (also not raw but again, good for transition).

I loved that video. I agree that if you find you keep yo-yoing on and off the 100% raw food diet, that you should consider just doing a high raw diet then there will be no guilt if you eat a little cooked food and you are less likely to binge. I also agree that if you are going to eat some cooked food that you should to try to be happy while you are eating it. Why add the negative emotions into the mix also? Eat slowly and methodically and really savor the tastes & smells and pay attention to how you feel during and afterwards.

I also liked your video "Raw lifestyle too expensive?" at [uk.youtube.com]. You talked about more than just the cost. You talked about how to transition into it by eating heavier foods at first.

Personally, I think one needs colonics for a long-term successful raw food lifestyle to keep up with the waste being eliminated. Matt Monarch's new book "Raw Success" talks about this and so do Norman Walker's classic books. If one isn't able to do colonics, I think high raw is better to slow down the detox somewhat. Just my opinion, but they are really helping me.

Thanks for the video, F1!

I think that the issues of detox, cravings and "slippage" should be mentioned a lot more than they are, and not just the physical aspects either. Eating raw goes waaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy beyond just eating differently; you're also starting a major upheaval of your mental and emotional states as well, and I think THAT is the thing that really kicks your butt!!! You've got to be prepared to face a lot of "stuff" that you may have been dancing around for years - and even issues that you may not conciously be aware of, but are intricately tied to how and what you eat in lieu of dealing with it head on. I think the more one is aware of this, and is motivated to work through his/her issues, the more successful one would be at beginning and sustaining the raw lifestyle...

Hey, it's hard enough just trying to change one habit/ aspect of yourself...How about overhauling three areas of your life simultaneously?!?

That's the journey I'm on now...

And I'm actually enjoying it...

The link between cheese and breastmilk is mention in Victoria Boutenko;s book 12 steps to raw food. Cheese seems to be the hardest thing to give up for many, a real addiction.

Trying to understand that and like David mentioned, going beyond that in your mind first has helped me a lot.

I am so to speak a recovering Brie addict. The last time I was so hooked I would totally binge on it and eat one of those triangle slices a day. What saved me is that after I while I literally started smelling like..cheese. Or something. When 100% I don't use deodorants because I don't smell.
But with all that cheese, not only the armpits smelled but the whole body odor. That finally gave me a wake up call after 2 weeks of binging !
Making nut/seed pastes helps me but they are quite fattening.

Hah yes it is nothing I'm proud of smiling smiley But it was some kind of what some people call "old people's smell". Once I used this storebought cilantro dressing and I reeked of cilantro for a few days. Raw cilantro won't do that to me.
My husband is Japanese and fortunately loves my raw smell hahaha

Thanks for all the suggestions: cashews, brewers yeast and another source of fullfilment, I'll remember them and try them before raiding the fridge the next time!

Unfortunately I don't live with another rawfooder, so no one is here to apreciate my "raw smell" or find out if I smell like cheese, but thanks for mentioning it, it adds a "gross factor" to cheese. All this cheese smell talk reminds me of a line in the Heidi move (1969 version) where she meets Clara, and Clara says "You, smell like cheese" I can't get that scene out of my head now :-)
