Nine reasons why we are not built to eat meat.

------------------------------------------

I'm reposting this again. This is from Muscle & Fitness magazine, October 1992 issue. Nine reasons why we are not built to eat meat. Comparing 3 groups ; Carnivores ( lions, tigers, wolves ). Herbivores ( gorillas, horses, cows ). And Human Beings.

TEETH
Carnivores : Long canines, to tear flesh.
Herbivores : Flat molars, to grind plant food.
Human Beings : Flat molars, to grind nuts and vegetables.

JAWS
Carnivores : Open wide, to capture their prey - but they can't move sideways, to grind plant food.
Herbivores : Can't open wide - but they can move side to side, to grind plant food.
Human Beings : Can't open wide, but they can move side to side, to grind nuts and vegetables.

CLAWS
Carnivores : Long and sharp to tear flesh.
Herbivores : No claws.
Human Beings : No claws - only fingers, to pick vegetables.

BOWEL WALLS
Carnivores : Smooth, to let meat move along quickly.
Herbivores : Full of pouches. Meat could get stuck, and putrefy.
Human Beings : Full of pouches. Meat can get stuck, and putrefy, causing colon cancer and other problems.

INTESTINES
Carnivores : Very short - meat can pass through quickly without putrefying.
Herbivores : Very long - meat could putrefy.
Human Beings : Very long - meat could putrefy.

STOMACH
Carnivores : Highly acidic, to digest meat easily.
Herbivores : Very alkaline, to digest carbohydrates easily.
Human Beings : Very alkaline, to digest carbohydrates easily.

DRINK
Carnivores : By lapping.
Herbivores : By swallowing.
Human Beings : By swallowing.

SWEAT
Carnivores : Through their tongues only.
Herbivores : Through skin pores.
Human Beings : Through skin pores.

INSTINCTS
Carnivores : When they see their prey bleeding, they pounce on it.
Herbivores : When they see smaller animals, they don't yearn to kill them.
Human Beings : When most people see an injured, bleeding animal, they feel repulsed or want to help it. Most people would be horrified to see an animal slaughtered.

I think if an omnivore group was included, humans would match them a lot closer than Herbivores.

Certainly, humans can eat anything.

Still, there's no reason why people can't survive as vegetarians. IIRC the oldest woman currently alive (120) is a vegetarian.

If I found out that I should eat bugs, I would. Starting with all the pests on this board (just kidding!)

Hey Thomas, after lots of thought on this subject, I decided that our "natural" diet would almost certainly have included bugs (insects) so I do eat them!

How do you harvest them Rob? Or do you put some honey out and let them come to you?

The best part of my joke is that one of you is named Little Bug..... mmmmm..... haha..

Yeah Rob, I read that in another thread. I do find the idea interesting, although I currently have no real basis for eating bugs.
