Missing vitamins and minerals in a raw food diet?

Hi,

I now have been raw for a little more than a month and a half following the 80-10-10. To tell the truth, I like this way of eating and I like the food but I don't feel any real energy difference. I don't know if I'm still in a detox period and that this would be the reason I don't feel any better than before.

I'm already healthy and kind of skinny but I often feel tired and I have some tight muscles that prevent me from doing my favorite sport, running. So far, dry skin, tiredness and tight muscles still plagues me.

I'm also worried about all these vitamins and minerals a typical raw food diet seem to be low in. B12 is the most obvious but I also read about zinc, magnesium, selenium, vitamin D, iron, ... I eat lot of greens and fruits and I don't like the idea of taking powders and supplements and I don't really understand why the best diet for me would be deficient in so much vitamins and minerals.

I don't want to go back to cooked for, but I guess I just want to be reassured about that. What do you people do to get enough of those vitamins and minerals. What do experts say on the subject?

Also, I read some vegies like kale and spinach are high in magnesium but that they contain natural toxins and should not be eaten in high quantity. I'm a little confused and don't really want to fall in the trap of taking powders for everything my body needs.

Thanks in advance

With all due respect any 80-10-10 or other rigidly imposed "system".....is silly and probably not optimal for your health. Eat what your body craves.

As Timothy Leary said to the many......"Listen to your nervous system".....

As I would say....Listen and trust one person entirely - yourself. Love and do as you will. All else follows from there and it is pretty darn easy.

"Make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler" - Einstein.

Love,
Paul

I agree. I am at 12% of calories from fat already today and have had no oil, seeds, or nuts except a little bit of rice-almond-buckwheat milk. I think 20% of calories from fat is more reasonable, for those of us who want to sustain the lifestyle and get all nutrients, some of which are abundant in higher-fat foods.

Go for 20% and see how you feel.

what is it exactly that you can eat cooked that you can't eat raw to get the same (or better) nutrients from? what are these foods groups i wonder? is it grain? legumes? you Can sprout these if you want to include them in your diet. is it flesh foods or dairy? you Can get those nutrients from other foods/other food combos.

just curious? for me the inclusion of cooked foods is to create things that my family will eat. if it were up to me i could have salad for every meal!

My answer was w/ regard to 80-10-10, NOT cooked versus raw. Just so you know. smiling smiley

svakanda,

This is a vegan forum and the posts need to be kept vegan in nature. I deleted your post because it recommended animal products. Non-vegans are welcome here, but the posts need to be about vegan topics.

Thank you.

I had more energy when I ate more and exercised more.
I've figured out I do best with about 1 hour of resistance
training and 1/2 hour of cardio and 600 more kcal/day
than what I am currently getting.

D and B12 are the only real problems. You can get
enough of the other minerals from good food choices.
I supplement with D2 and B12. You might not
be confronted with this dilemma if you grew and
fertilized your own food with animal manure and
got enough sunlight. I choose to protect my skin
and I also have a very shady backyard, too shady
to grow enough to eat, so I supplement.

Depends on how you define "expert." smiling smiley
Some "experts" just pull stuff out of the air.

You couldn't even if you wanted to--they start to
taste really bad. What helps some people to consume
more greens aside from a large salad every day is
to juice a few cups of green juice or to make green
smoothies. Alternating your greens should also help
to avoid toxin issues.

Rawgosia, I really enjoyed watching your videos. Your children look like rays of sunshine, and your husband is funny. My fave was your hubby playing guitar blues, and friend with harmonica. You look like a fun family.

Hi Rawrr!!! It's nice to bump into you again. You look so pretty in your picture. I couldn't watch the second video in your links, I am far too emotional for that, but thanks so much for posting it, I do need to remind myself from time to time when I have moments of doubts. Makeup thing also got to me recently, not that I use much (I usualy go bare face), but I heard of Inika range recently and suddenly started feeling like wanting to look like a fairy/goddess. If I remember well, you use mineral makeup only?

Rawgosia, you are so lovely, you don't need makeup. I wish I could sing as beautiful as you.

Aw, thank you! I was talking & slouching, not ready for the camera to be snapped.

Inika looks like nice makeup. I buy all my make up from the health food stores, and some of it is mineral. You can also use beet juice with with coconut oil or another oil for your lips.

I loved wearing makeup... until I detoxed and found out how much was in my sinuses. =( It's been a year and a half since I've stopped, and every now and then, some still comes out to say hello.

Would mineral makeup do the same thing? I'm performing at an art show tomorrow, and I'd love to do my face to match my outfit, but once I found out how synthetic (albeit cruelty-free) makeup hung around inside my body... yikes! :O

I've had mineral makeup come out in my spit. Wearing no makeup is the way to go. I really love my makeup, though.

Yes, I do mineral makeup and it is nasty to inhale. Even if you hold your breath while applying you will still get some.

Liquid is probably safer for that reason. Maybe a truly oil-free one with no emulsifiers or lipids that penetrate the skin.

You are right on, Arugula. Minerals don't belong in the lungs. I will look into that. I just wear it on my cheeks and eyes & lips, but even a little adds up.

Ever hear of pica? Some people call it a "disorder"....but I think not. It is the body saying...."What the heck are you doing?"

There are so many nutrients that we need that are not there. There is a reason people sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, go in their back yards and eat dirt. This actually happens.

Listen to the body. It knows. You are it, as well as......

Good luck.

Love,
Paul

Thanks for all your answers. I really like the way people treat each other in this community.

An other source that helped me get reassured is an article and Vegan society (http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/raw_food.php)

I now know that if I dose my food correctly, I should get more than enough magnesium and zinc.

They only two remaining things are Vitamin D and B12. After reading the above mentioned article, I decided to take a B12 supplement, but I haven't made my mind for vitamin D and I think I'll just way for the sun to give it to me.

Thanks again.

This thread has been so useful. It has made me consider more carefully what I am eating. Have been on fitday and had a look and went out to buy lots of niacin/zinc/selenium foods yesterday (co-incidentally seem to be the same foods for all!)
