Can an oven replace a dehydrator?

Date: March 05, 2008 10:23PM I have a quick question...I do not have a dehydrator and I have seen numerous delicious-looking recipes, that I would love to try, but they require a dehydrator. Can I use my oven instead and set it on the time and temp that the recipe calls for? Re: Can an oven replace a dehydrator?

Date: March 05, 2008 10:31PM I would not. There are several alternatives. You could buy a cheap dehydrator at your local thrift store.....although the easiest thing I heard was just to buy some cheap paper air filters and put the food inside, and bungee the works to a cheap box fan. Run for 24-48 hours. Low temps and dry food. Haven't tried it yet! LOL.

Date: March 05, 2008 11:26PM The dehydrator has a fan that blows the warm air across the exposed food surfaces resulting in more oxidation of the food. Re: Can an oven replace a dehydrator?

Date: March 06, 2008 10:03AM I have used my oven before, and it's very hard to control the temperature. Even with the door ajar & the oven on the lowest temp, I kept getting the nagging feeling that the food was being cooked.
Also, I disliked the idea that I was wasting enormous amounts of electricity! There's instructions for a DIY dehydrator here : [www.goneraw.com] Re: Can an oven replace a dehydrator?
